Resident Evil (2026) review

Image
Video game adaptations are a dime a dozen these days as I'm sure I've said countless times over the years on this blog. With that being said something about this version of Resident Evil felt different once it was announced that Director and writer Zach Cregger was involved. A self proclaimed fan of the game series at the helm? telling his own little story in the universe the games are set in? I'm sold and instantly I was sold again as right off the bat Resident Evil delivers a unique, quirky and at times hilarious romp befitting of it's visceral nature.  Zach Cregger's previous two movies being Barbarian and Weapons I was never truly skeptical about him turning Resident Evil into something it's not and now after seeing it I have to say that he gets it he just really does. Easter eggs litter the screen almost frame after frame from first aid sprays to scavaging for bullets it's all here and done so expertly. Austin Abarams stars as a courier tasked with deli...

Practical Magic 2 review

Image
Bubble, toil and trouble make a sequel and make it double (sorry) I just recently only saw the original Practical Magic and really had a great time with it. It was charming, full of magic and felt almost like a warm winter blanket on a chilly Autumn day. Now decades later and the Owens sisters have returned for another outing of magic, family and curses. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as said Owens sisters but now they're not alone as Sally (Bullock) now a widow has two grown up daughters whom she has been hiding the truth about her family from. What follows is lies, love and a trip to the UK.  The first 30 minutes or so of this sequel has zero going for it at least for me it's not until the big secret of the Owens family curse gets blown is when the movie really kicks into gear following a bunch of cheesey one liners and attempts at covering up a pretty well known secret. After Sally's daughter experiences a tragic event she heads to the UK by herself leading to...

One Night Only (2026) review

Image
What seemed like a pretty creative idea on paper is not so much in execution as One Night Only while having an interesting premise and look at what could be a not too far into the future landscape it doesn't quite have the elements needed to be a really good rom-com. The story revolves around a new mandate introduced by Congress where for a short 12 hour period one day every year pre-marital sex is allowed leading to chaos in the streets, resturants, subway and even the sidewalks no place is safe as the movie follows the story of two newly single people played by Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. The two meeting one another countless times throughout the night as they try to find love and sleep with someone within said 12 hour time period.  One Night Only unfortunately isn't all that exciting which is a shame because given the plot it leaves the door wide open for many NYC nightime shenanigans and while there is some there isn't nearly enough at least for me. That being s...

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma review

Image
Teenage, Sex and Death at Camp Miasma wow what a title and really what a movie truth be told. I absolutely adore the horror sub genre of Slasher movies. It's easily one of my favorite forms of movies and this movie properly solidifies that in what is one of the most original, insane and downright bonkers movie I've seen this year. The story follows a young queer Director who gets tasked with making a reboor / remake of a long running slasher series called you guessed it..Camp Miasma. This director literally becomes obsessed with the notion of making the movie and once she meets the original 'final girl' from the first movie she falls into both sexual and psychological chaos. Starring Hannah Einbinder as the director and Gillan Anderson as the final girl Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma literally flips the genre upside down delivering one bloody and visceral ride. Friday the 13th inspirations are aplenty throughout here from it's sleepaway camp like setting to ...

The Dog Stars review

Image
Based upon the acclaimed novel Ridley Scott's latest movie is a real stick in the mud rather than this big, bold post apocalyptic survival movie that is seems to be on paper. Featuring a pretty stellar cast including Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce and more The Dog Stars has a lot going on but for the most part it just feels rather bland and uninteresting. It follows a group of survivors from a global pandemic (2020 vibes) who search for a mysterious radio transmissions origin point. What follows is a fight for survival against scavengers, wild dogs and whatever else may be lurking around.  Performance wise I did like Jacob Elordi's performance here it's a bit one note but for what is was trying to go for it I found it really working. As for everyone else they do a fine job but really the material they're working with isn't exactly astounding in a screenplay that tries to do so much but manages to achieve very little in my opinion. Visually...

Coyote vs Acme review

Image
Who doesn't love the Looney Tunes?? I and I'm sure plenty others grew up watching the cartoons from a very young age. They were and are still timeless to this very day. It's now 2026 and after WB canned a potential Coyote vs Acme movie it ended up being saved by a company named Ketchup Entertainment who in association with WB have now finally released the movie. But is it any good?? the answer is a resounding yes! the story of Coyote vs Acme follows exactly that a court battle between Wile E Coyote who after many failed attempts at trying to catch the roadrunner decides to hire a lawyer to help him sue the Acme Corporation due to constant product destruction and injury.  What follows is a hilarious movie laced with physical gags and comedy but really with a real beating heart in moments that helps elevate the movie to really strong heights. It also pretty much flawlessly intertwines live action with the Looney Tunes worlds various extravagant characters and known setpiece...

RIP Hayden Panettiere - A tribute

Image
I never do tributes or share any sort of words about actors on this blog but this one this feels different. Hayden Panettiere was so much more than an actor to me. Even though I never got to meet her living through and loving her work has been nothing short of an honour. The first time I can remember truly seeing her was Scream 4. Along came this hilarious, stunningly beautiful woman who was so smart so empathetic and empowering it was hard not to instantly become a fan of hers. 15 or so years later and hearing of her own personal battles with various matters was tragic yet there was light at the end of it all and she was in the midst of making a comeback a comeback that has been tragically cut so short. At only 36 years old she is only 6 years older than I am right now which really puts your own life and mortality into perspective. So with all that being said I just wanted to come on here and write in my own way totally off the cuff just a few words in her memory. From Kirby Ree...

The End of Oak Street review

Image
Cosmic events, dinasours and a transported street The End of Oak Street is a fascining movie it truly is. It starts off all swell just like another other regular day in an American suburban neighbor hood. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor play a mother and father to two children. Known as The Platt family they seem like your run of the mill family so when their entire lives are turned upside down they are transported back in time back to the age of the Dinasour how will they manage to handle it?? it's a fight for survival both inside their home and outside as tension is propelled to the max. I really did want to like this movie and while I did at points something just feels off especially why the family get transported back in time it comes out of nowhere and really isn't solved all that well all culminating in a sort of full circle moment, in between there are big and bold action setpieces as the family and any and all survivors instead of banding together to survive all seem ...

Sunny Dancer review

Image
A celebration of youth couldn't be more accurate of what Sunny Dancer represents as it showcases the true power and strength of youth, their friendships and the many highs and lows of life. Sunny Dancer follows a 17 year old named Ivy a cancer survivor whose parents sign her up for a 4 week summer camp deemed as Ivy calls it a ''chemo camp'' upon her arrival she struggles to fit in but as time passes and she begins to make friends she has a summer that she will never forget including love, romance, friendship and everything else in between.  Bella Ramsey is brilliant here as young Ivy a witty, strong willed young woman who comes across as somewhat shy at first but once she opens up at the camp she becomes herself more and more leading to many amazing summer days and nights with her new group of friends who like her are all either cancer survivors or cancer patients themselves. Her performance is effortless in a movie that is absolutely gut wrenchingly beautiful. A...

Spiderman: Brand New Day review

Image
The latest chapter of Spiderman in the MCU begins and with it comes a genuinely great movie that manages to juggle so many things really well without losing much quality. Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker / Spiderman and after the events of the previous movie he is all alone in NYC. Bad guys are popping up everywhere and Spiderman is doing Spidey things while Peter Parker gets put on the back burner. The movie opens with a great montage of both classic villains being apprehended and other various small time crimes being stopped by Spiderman. It's a perfect setup to a movie that introduces a ton of things from Sadie Sink's mysterious character to The Punisher playing a pretty chunky role to even a rampaging Hulk Brand New Day has got it all going on and as a whole l it handles everything well and doesn't rely on too many jokes which was very refreshing. After the events of the previous movie No Way Home I do really love how much character development Peter Parker gets he...

The Odyssey (2026) review

Image
The latest movie from Christopher Nolan has arrived and it may very well be his most epic yet. The Odyssey tells the story of the book of the same name by Homer based upon ancient Greek literature. This is Nolan's take on the story and not only does it feel very human and like an ancient awakening from it's slumber but it's got real heart. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus the legendary Greek King of Ithaca. He is tasked with starting and finishing a war to end all wars that is now known as the Trojan War. What follows is an Odyssey in more than words as Odysseus's decade journey home becomes filled with obstacles of both mental and physical.  The Odyssey really does feel like a living breathing book come to life there is passion withing every frame as Nolan showcases stunning vistas time after time and when it gets dark and gloomy boy does it too as the challenges on the way home for Odysseus who wants nothing more than to get home, keep his crew safe and be with his fami...

Evil Dead Burn review

Image
After the big success of 2023's Evil Dead Rise comes a new entry into the long running horror franchise. What do you get when you put an in law meeting at the funeral of your husband who just also just so happens to have not actually passed away but instead is an incarnation of hell itself and wants nothing to do but make the world and those he loves in it burn?? you get this movie and boy oh boy is this movie a trip. Evil Dead movies have always not been for the faint of heart but Burn goes above and beyond in it's attempt at spilling as much blood as possible in a movie that is half part intense and grotesque and the other a really cheesey final act packed with uninspired CGI. Blood, blood and more blood seemed to be on the agenda for all involved in bringing Evil Dead Burns to life as it sort of shys away from the original concept of the dead rising from the grave thanks to the book of the dead in it's stead is a long standing family drama in the form of a real living ...

Moana (2026) review

Image
The latest Disney live action remake of a beloved classic animated movie comes in the form of Moana a movie that is barely a decade old. With that in mind is this just a cash grab or does it hold it's own value?? well..it's the former unfortunately as Moana is pretty much just a retelling of the original movie in live action form and it doesn't nearly hold or look as charming as the original did almost a decade ago now. The visuals are so off putting at points it's almost nauseating with uncomfortable views of a blatant backdrop / green screen present especially in the water scenes it's really so off putting and doesn't help in what is otherwise a basic and rather bland live action remake of Moana.  The Rock is back as demi god Maui sporting a pretty ridiculous wig and much like the lackluster visuals it's just really off putting as it doesn't seem to sit right nor does it really add anything and I know the original character had hair like this but sur...

Supergirl (2026) review

Image
The DCU train chugs along and after a really lackluster start point with Superman last summer can his cousin Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl fair any better?? based upon the comic named Woman of Tomorrow this version of Supergirl is a lot more robust, more of a rebel and party goer rather than the traditional Girl of Steel let's say akin to Melissa Benoist's portrayal in the Supergirls show. Milly Alcock is brilliant here as Supergirl / Kara and really carries the movie on her shoulders pretty efforlessly. Her Kara is a lot more darker, more vulnerable and a whole lot more relatable to Superman in this universe given we see her backstory and how it defines her to ultimately becoming the person and hero she was always supposed to be.  The Woman of Tomorrow comic is a real personal favorite of mine as not only is it dark in it's themes and overall narrative but it's presentation is next to none. Visually popping off the page the movie doesn't really do the comic justice in ...

Batman - Frozen Blood : Vengeance timeline

Image
Opening narration : December 22nd Christmas in Gotham was like a winter wonderland, the snow was falling at heavy amounts decorating the city in white, 3 months have passed since Vengeance seemingly disappeared and Bruce Wayne has been doing his upmost to restore Gotham's faith in not just Batman but the Wayne name and legacy, Robin is now Nightwing and is keeping Bludhaven safe with the help of his Titan friends which leaves Bruce, Barbara Gordon and Alfred now the sole protectors of Gotham City...but there's a freezing air flowing and something is brewing that is sure to chill Gotham to it's very core.    Alfred Pennyworth “Tea sir?? Ms Gordon??” Alfred along with Bruce and Barbara are in the bat-cave Alfred pouring out two cups of tea for them both as they've just arrived back from a night out on patrol                                    Barbara Gordon “You know I'm grateful for...
