Supergirl (2026) review

The DCU train chugs along and after a really lackluster start point with Superman last summer can his cousin Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl fair any better?? based upon the comic named Woman of Tomorrow this version of Supergirl is a lot more robust, more of a rebel and party goer rather than the traditional Girl of Steel let's say akin to Melissa Benoist's portrayal in the Supergirls show. Milly Alcock is brilliant here as Supergirl / Kara and really carries the movie on her shoulders pretty efforlessly. Her Kara is a lot more darker, more vulnerable and a whole lot more relatable to Superman in this universe given we see her backstory and how it defines her to ultimately becoming the person and hero she was always supposed to be.

The Woman of Tomorrow comic is a real personal favorite of mine as not only is it dark in it's themes and overall narrative but it's presentation is next to none. Visually popping off the page the movie doesn't really do the comic justice in that sense instead going for less of a vibrant color palette instead opting for the usual dark browns and washed out colors which is unfortunate. What's also unfortunate is Jason Mamoa as Lobo as while he is good and definitely looks the part his screen time is so under used and almost feels like he was forced into the movie in a way. If he wasn't here it wouldn't really change much overall at least in my opinion. As for the main villain he is as pretty bare bones comic book movie material and while not truly terrible he is very cliche leading into the typical revenge plot as Kara is tagged along by a young girl who watched her parents be killed not to mention Krypto being poisoned and a ticking clock attempt to get the antidote for him.

After Superman last year I was very skpetical upon seeing this and while it's nowhere near perfect it's a solid foot forward especially Milly Alcock's Kara / Supergirl whose backstory and story of her going forward along with Superman holds a lot of promise. She is a far cry from Superman which is what I wanted her version of the character to be. As for the finale of the movie it felt more like a mad max inspired collision course more than anything else resulting in a movie that feels underbaked but somewhat enjoyable at the same time.
