The Odyssey (2026) review

The latest movie from Christopher Nolan has arrived and it may very well be his most epic yet. The Odyssey tells the story of the book of the same name by Homer based upon ancient Greek literature. This is Nolan's take on the story and not only does it feel very human and like an ancient awakening from it's slumber but it's got real heart. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus the legendary Greek King of Ithaca. He is tasked with starting and finishing a war to end all wars that is now known as the Trojan War. What follows is an Odyssey in more than words as Odysseus's decade journey home becomes filled with obstacles of both mental and physical.

The Odyssey really does feel like a living breathing book come to life there is passion withing every frame as Nolan showcases stunning vistas time after time and when it gets dark and gloomy boy does it too as the challenges on the way home for Odysseus who wants nothing more than to get home, keep his crew safe and be with his family again. Speaking of his family his wife and son played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland are great here too in a truly stunning cast who all do a phenomenal job throughout.

The Odyssey is destined to be one of the best movies of 2026. In a way it was always going to be given the classic source material and Christopher Nolan's eye for detail, spectacle and passion. Filmed primarily for IMAX it shows and is one of Nolan's best movies in well over a decade. Brace for impact and the brutal depiction of war, sacrifice and the ultimate power grab as The Odyssey is a masterclass of modern day cinema.
