Boy Kills World review

Image
Blood and vengeance. That's the motif of Boy Kills World and it is arguably the most fun I've had in a movie theater so far this year. Bill Skarsgard stars as silent man who only communicates through a badass voice he has made up in his head. At just a young age his entire family is killed right in front of him by a corrupt regime who call this process 'The Culling' it happens once a year and is basically the elite eliminating whom they see as poor and worthless. Skarsgard's silent hero breaks away from his Shaman teacher and forgers a path directly for the elite stronghold.  Boy Kills World at times feels like a Saturday morning cartoon on acid. It's trippy and hilarious, Skarsgard is absolutely shredded for this role and the intense action is absolutely incredible throughout. There's plenty of video game references mainly to arcade games and Player 1 and Player 2. It does get pretty grim and dark at times as death fills the screen time and time again wit

Challengers review

Image
From director Luca Guadagino of Call Me By Your Name fame comes Challengers a sultry, sexy tennis love triangle. At least that's what it's proposed to be. In reality Challengers feels like a 2 hour long music video in parts with so much dance / techno overwhelming what should've been intense scenes between characters. The story of Challengers revolves around 2 tennis players who vie for the same girl who herself as a prodigy within the sport. Both take a liking to her almost instantly leading into the core of the movie which involves betrayal, lust and intensity.  Zendaya is the main attraction here it's clear to see and her performance is good actually, her co-stars are also good to great and the connection between them all feels pretty realistic even if they all do come across as pretty horrible people in a movie that feels sorta horrible and uptight. I guess I just didn't really vibe with this as much as others will but there was times where I just wanted the w

Abigail review

Image
From the team behind the new Scream movies comes Abigail a blood soaked vampiric dream scape that is as entertaining as it is full of the red stuff. The story follows a group of people who kidnap the 12 year old daughter of a seemingly wealthy man..or have they?? it's a simple clean setup and throws you right into the heart of the action, there's no messing around or waiting here which I loved. From Melissa Berrera to Katherny Newton to Kevin Durand and more Abigial's cast is energetic, hilarious and full to the brim of life.  To say there is a lot of blood involved here would be an understatement, there's blood almost from the get go. Blood comes out of people, blood sprays people, blood is spewed like water from a faucet and it is as gross as it is devilish. The majority of the movie taking place in a giant mansion proves for some fun and unquie moments but much like other horror movies the cliche split up and see what we can find happens here leading to more myster

Civil War (2024) review

Image
From writer / director Alex Garland comes Civil War which is set in a dystopian America where a team of military-embedded journalist races against time to reach Washington D.C. before rebel factions desend on the White House to take out the President of the United States. Alex Garland's past work is pretty much nothing short of spetacular so hopes were high for this movie and it's easy to say that Civil War is as fantastic as it is harrowing and adrenaline fueled. Starring Kirsten Dunst and a star performance from Cailee Spaney Civil War's opening of a chaos infused America sets things up perfectly.  What follows is a long road trip to D.C. where along the way all manner of things happen and go wrong from looters and shooters to a truly terrifying standout between the group and two armed soldiers. Alex Garland's ability to craft and deliver scenes like this is second to none and it shows once again here that he is one of the best working today. Performance wise Civil

The First Omen review

Image
The original Omen movie is a horror classic no doubt. What followed however, not so much at least in my opinion. It's now 2024 and we're going back to the beginning even before the first movie as The First Omen is essentially that it tells the tale of the baby who would become the Anti-Christ and his mother apparent.  It begins in 1971 Italy when a nun arrives to pledge her vows to the Church. Her faith is soon in shambles when she uncovers a sinister plan to birth the Anti-Christ leading to some truly terrifying and unsettling scenes. Nell Tiger Free truly shines as Sister Margaret who goes through quite the ordeal throughout.  The First Omen doesn't shy away from the true blasphemous acts of the church and the riots that insued against them. It's all compacted in an almost 2 hour scarefest that is as surprisingly good as it is harrowing. It also doesn't shy away from getting pretty graphic leading to a pretty uncomfortable birthing scene and a sense of dread onc
