Video game adaptations are a dime a dozen these days as I'm sure I've said countless times over the years on this blog. With that being said something about this version of Resident Evil felt different once it was announced that Director and writer Zach Cregger was involved. A self proclaimed fan of the game series at the helm? telling his own little story in the universe the games are set in? I'm sold and instantly I was sold again as right off the bat Resident Evil delivers a unique, quirky and at times hilarious romp befitting of it's visceral nature.  Zach Cregger's previous two movies being Barbarian and Weapons I was never truly skeptical about him turning Resident Evil into something it's not and now after seeing it I have to say that he gets it he just really does.   Bubble, toil and trouble make a sequel and make it double (sorry) I just recently only saw the original Practical Magic and really had a great time with it. It was charming, full of magic and felt almost like a warm winter blanket on a chilly Autumn day. Now decades later and the Owens sisters have returned for another outing of magic, family and curses. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as said Owens sisters but now they're not alone as Sally (Bullock) now a widow has two grown up daughters whom she has been hiding the truth about her family from. What follows is lies, love and a trip to the UK.  The first 30 minutes or so of this sequel has zero going for it at least for me it's not until the big secret of the Owens family curse gets blown is when the movie really kicks into gear following a bunch of cheesey one liners and attempts at covering up a pretty well known secret.   What seemed like a pretty creative idea on paper is not so much in execution as One Night Only while having an interesting premise and look at what could be a not too far into the future landscape it doesn't quite have the elements needed to be a really good rom-com. The story revolves around a new mandate introduced by Congress where for a short 12 hour period one day every year pre-marital sex is allowed leading to chaos in the streets, resturants, subway and even the sidewalks no place is safe as the movie follows the story of two newly single people played by Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. The two meeting one another countless times throughout the night as they try to find love and sleep with someone within said 12 hour time period.  One Night Only unfortunately isn't all that exciting which is a shame because given the plot it leaves the door wide open for many NYC nightime shenanigans and while there is some there isn't nearly enough at least for me.
