Street Fighter (2026) review
Another passing week and yet another video game movie adaptation hits the big screen. This time around Street Fighter gets a glow up from it's original 1994 counterpart. Based upon the smash hit fighting arcade style video game Street Fighters mainly centers around it's two main iconic characters Ryu and Ken. Set in the 90's once friends now estranged the two are forced back together when they're recurited to take part in a giant fighting tournament held by the mysterious and evil Lord M. Bison. What follows is a over the top at times very messy movie that tries to be a lot of things and while it succeeds in some aspects in others it falls flat on it's fast resulting in a TKO.
For starters the characters apart from Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are pushed aside for the most part. It's got a pretty beefy runtime of two hours and it struggles a lot to warrant having so many characters for the most part even so much so that the fight tournament itself is kicked, beaten and tossed to the side as very little of it is showcased. Instead we get a lot of soul searching from Ryu especially and a lot of goofiness from Ken. The cast do a great job though I must admit certainly looking the part with Chun-Li being the standout here I can't praise her performance highly enough. I also really like how various aspects of the narrative are woven together via 2D animation which not only looked stunning on th big screen but also helped keep the pace going smoothly.
Street Fighter isn't a bad movie nor is it anything really special. It's packed with needle drop moments and many, many action scenes backed by various different tracks from the 90's. It's also not very funny for the most part with the most of it's jokes feeling flat and unecessary especially from M.Bison and a few others. Is it better than the 1994 version? I would say yes it is absolutely but on it's own it's just a popcorn movie that does what you'd expect it to do and not much else. If you love the games you'll get your fill I think and really isn't that what adaptations are all about?? Ready. Set. Fight.
