Clayface review
I was lucky enough to see Clayface a few days before it's official release and boy oh boy what a time this movie is. The big screen debut of one of Batman's most classic villains is finally here and for my money it has been more than worth the wait. The story of Clayface follows an actor named Matt Hagen. Fresh off of being nominated for an academy award his life gets turned upside down when he gets entagled with a local crime boss after spending the night with the crime boss's girlfriend. What follows is a visceral, bloody and at times emotional movie packed with body horror, betrayal, intense moments and a final act that is as tragic as it is utterly compelling. Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen and is absolutely mesmarising in the role of the actor. He is so handsome and his face almost sculpted like that it and it alone adds so much to the narrative and emotional aspect. The way his face moves and sort of distorts is really well done and while stomach turning at times it really doesn't shy away from the body horror element that comes with Clayface.
Visually this movie is really solid which is impressive given it's pretty low budget for a DC movie. Is it perfect? no but it works and it works really well I would go as far as to say it's visually more appealing than Supergirl which was severely lacking in the visual department earlier this year. If I one complaint about Clayface it would be that Gotham does sort of feel dead, unalive and rather bland instead of a character of it's own which the city usually is.
Clayface is easily the best DCU movie from James Gunn and his team yet. It's DC Studios finest movie by far in my opinion with great character moments, really impressive performances especially from Tom Rhys Harries who carries the movie with charm, a lot of anger and dark moments given what happens to his character. Clayface has always been one of my favorite Batman villains and this movie does the character justice in so many ways especially a nightclub scene that is just superb and so well done showcasing the newly gained powers of Matt Hagen. As for the ending well the final shot is just perfection and exactly how I imagine that movie would end. If you're a DC fan like me I think you'll love Clayface if not then I think you'll still find a really solid body horror movie perfect for this time of the year. Brilliant!
