The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review

Mario is my guy. One of it not my favorite video game character of all time. Back in 2023 the original Super Mario Bros Movie released and I absolutely loved it, still do whenever I rewatch it. Sure it has it's problems but as a fan of the series it was near perfect in terms of fan service and understanding of the whimsical magical world of the plumber and his supporting cast. This time around however Nintendo and Illumination have taken it upon themselves to adapt arguably the greatest Mario game of all time (depending on who you're asking) in Mario Galaxy. A true space epic that first debuted on the Wii console. The story is pretty bare bones to be honest which is much like it's video game counter part as really who plays these games for the story?? we or at least I playe them for the character interactions and the smooth as silk gameplay. With that being said is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie a fun time?? oh boy is it.

Big, visually stunning and hilarious at times The Super Mario Galaxy movie is the first movie injected with a super star. The pacing is unrelenting as it bounces sometimes quite literally from one scene to the next. The movie begins with the introduction of Rosalina, Princess of the cosmos. An all out attack on her castle takes place by none other than Bowser Jr who kidnaps her in order to power a giant super cannon on his very own planet all to impress his dad Bowser who is still captured at the Mushroom Kingdom. Like I said the pacing here is pretty much all go with little room to really breathe but to be honest that's what I loved about it so much. References and musical motifs fill the screen scene after scene all packed in a 90 or so minute movie that is pure fan service in a movie that really is made for the fans and newcomers alike.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an absolute blast to be had at the theater. With two credit scenes the universe will surely only get bigger from here on out and I for one am excited to see where it all goes with even more characters surely on the way. Is it better than the original?? well that's hard to judge just on one watch but I really did love my time here. Could've done with actual more Galaxy references would be my major complaint here as stuff from Odyssey and Mario Bros 2 games feel somewhat out of place. That being said this is a super powered sequel that Nintendo and Illumination have crafted and long may it continue!
