Song Sung Blue review
I love a good musical style movie. This movie tells the real life story of a Neil Diamond tribute act named ' Lightning and Thunder’ starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Song Sung Blue is emotional, full of whimsical music moments and a connection between the two leads that is energetic.
Jackman’s energy is infectious throughout here as he plays an aging showman who gigs from place to place doing tribute acts along the way. Also being an alcoholic who is sober for over 20 years his character is extremely flawed but you can’t help but still root for him. Kate Hudson is fantastic here too and I did not expect her to sing as well as she did it’s all very impressive stuff on the surface but where Song Sung Blue fumbles is in its second act that is very dark, very grim and absent of any real joy or colour, it all does come around again but it suffers a lot from a meandering and depressing second act!
So is Song Sung Blue any good? Yes it is! It’s a pretty surreal true story that showcases the importance of life loved ones and success while also providing some absolute belter moments in song and music. It’s second act let’s it down from being something truly great but overall this is a real solid movie.
