The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants review

Who doesn't like Spongebob right?? if you're like me you grew up with the yellow sea Sponge wanting to watch the cartoon at all times of the day and night. Fast forward almost 27 years and it's still going arguably stronger than ever in terms of how frequently new episodes, spinoffs and movies now drop. Well now it's the turn of the fourth main movie and our absorbent hero is travelling to the deepest, darkest parts of the sea for his latest adventure. And what an adventure it is as Spongebob attempts to overcome challenge after challenge in the Underworld all in pursuit of becoming a 'big guy' and swash buckling hero all the while Mr Krabs, Squidward and Gary attempt to save him from the Flything Dutchman's clutches!

Right off the bat it's clear that this version of Spongebob is a whole lot different than the one I grew up watching. He's more expressive, more whimsical and a lot more energetic. The animation too is slick and very pretty to look at it as it really is like chewing gum for the eyes. As for the story well it's pretty standard for Spongebob but that's okay because it works and at points it works really well in what I'd say is easily my second favorite movie after the original. It's fun, absorbent and packed full of one liners gags and quirky character moments.

Search for Squarepants isn't perfect by any means but it is thoroughly enjoyable for kids and adults alike of all ages really. It's tight runtime and visuals are great only let down really by what I fear many new episodes have become which is the constant over the top facial animations that are far too distracting and at times so off putting it can be a bit much at points. It also features a really fun live action segement to wrap things up and put a neat little bow on this nautical adventure. T'know I couldn't really fault my time spent with Spongebob and it felt good to see him again after such a long time away from watching. Dare say I may get back into watching him again. Ahoy mateys!
