The Housemaid (2025) review

Oh what a dark and at times disturbing web The Housemaid weaves. Starring Sydney Sweeney as a young woman out and down on her luck her life takes a drasticly good turn when she gets hired to be the housemaid of a highly wealthy family. Also starring Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar The Housemaid is an interesting at times disjointed movie that while very engaging and well paced tonally feels like two seperate movies squashed together, at least it did so for me.

Sweeney is great here and arguably steals the show as young Mille. Coming from a troubled past she plays her part well while just oozing charm and true sex appeal. Amanda Seyfried's performance is wild and chaotic leading to constant screaming battles, showdowns and an overall sense of dread for Mille as Seyfried's Nina's mental health doesn't seem to be at all stable. Enter her husband played by Sklenar who is charming, handsome and the typical big shot lawyer. After some time passes and things get more interesting it's not long before an attraction develops between the hosuemaid and husband but is it forbidden fruit??

The Housemaid is a really interesting movie it truly is. It's well acted, paced well and is well worth checking out but it just didn't sit right with me at points. Scenes of obsence violence especially in the third act felt so out of place and unnatrual all leading to a finale that was pretty predictable all things considered. The cast are great and overall The Housemaid is really solid but there's just something missing here that I couldn't quite put my finger on. If you're a fan of the book I'm sure you'll find yourself having a great time!
