Christy review
Sydney Sweeney has been quite the controversial figure the past year or so. So can she perform a one two punch here or does this movie fall flat on it's behind? Sweeney stars as Christy Salters (Martin) a young woman from Virginia, she is the daughter of a coalminer which would later become her nickname in the boxing world. She boxes in various competitions to earn money to get by with her relationship with her mom especially being on tender hooks. Her entire life changes when a scout notices her boxing ability. It's not long before she is earning a lot more money but all at the cost of her newly found lesbian romance with a girl named Rosie. It's this relationship that is the real core of this movie as it begins to unravel and show it's pretty nasty core.
Upon her arrival to a gym to train and work hard on her newfound craft and passion it is here where Christy meets trainer Jim Martin who begins to train her and eventually take complete control of her life in what is such a tragic and toxic relationship. In that sense Christy is a tale of two halves in a way as the first half focuses on her boxing career from the highs of meeting Don King and making more money then she could've even imagined to ultimately being a domestic abuse survivor. It's brutal and vicious, heartbreaking and emotional.
I have to commend Sydney Sweeney here. Not only is her performance her best but her transformation both physically and visually is immense. It's the polar opposite of how so many people see her and it really does help in conveying just how committed she was to this role. It's a performance that is as heartbreaking as it is strong and empowering. If you don't know the real life story of Christy Martin the final act is extremely intense leading to an emotional climax. Christy Martin was a true pioneer for women in boxing and her legacy deserves to be stated and seen. As for this movie overall it's good, great infact but there's just something off here. It's hard to explain but it's pacing and real focus seems all over the place at times. It does not however take away from Sydney Sweeney's performance which is absolutely a knockout. If you're into boxing and know of Christy Martin then this will be certainly worth checking out!
