Blue Moon review
From Director Richard Linklater comes Blue Moon a story about art, creativity and struggles with one's mental health. Ethan Hawke stars and steals the entire show as Lorenz Hart a creative lyrical genius and one half of the iconic duo Hart and Rogers. The entire story of Blue Moon takes place inside a hotel where Hart is struggling to come to terms with his partner Richard Rogers who has just premiered his new broadway show Oaklahoma! with a new writing partner. It is the worst night of his life declares Hart as he sits at the bar after leaving the show early even though he declares that he was the last to leave. It's an immense performance from Ethan Hawke here in what is such a tragic, unnerving role as the strugglers of Lorenz Hart is paramount. It's clear to see how hurt he is that his musical partner has worked with someone other than him. And when everyone arrives back at the hotel it's even more evident as the two bicker and trade some nasty words all while navigating a packed hotel which is full of praise for Rogers.
Andrew Scott and Ethan Hawke play off one another flawlessly here with small bickering moments leading to full blown arguments. In a room full of people Hart seemingly feels empty and all alone even though he does try his best to convince every single person in their otherwise. Everyone from the bartender to various guests are charmed by his words and high intellect. With tales of who he has worked with and what he has done it's all rich and full of detail and Hawke delivers a pitch perfect performance that is arguably one of his all time best in my opinion. Will it be for everyone? well no but if you're a lover of Hart and Rogers who did write some all time great music and songs together or even just a lover of the theather and broadway this is a must see movie.
Blue Moon is an incredible watch it really is. Everything from Ethan Hawke's truly excellent performance to it's many supporting characters including Margaret Qualley and Simon Delaney Blue Moon is equiste on the pallet and offers a detailed look at the world of theather, a high level genius and wanting to just be appreciated for your work. Richard Linklater has delivered an instant classic that is absolutely must see!
