Black Phone 2 review

I really liked the original Black Phone movie a few years back. The Grabber was a menacing villain brought to life by Ethan Hawke. Well some time has now passed and after what happened at the end of the previous movie siblings Finn and Gwen begin to be tormented once more by The Grabber but this time in a far more sinister way. It's been some time since the original movie and for Finn he has struggled with his time being held captive by The Grabber, his sister Gwen plays a far more integaral part in this movie as she is really the main focus here for the most part. The Black Phone begins to ring once more which leads to brother and sister heading to a winter camp as Gwen begins to dream of three young boys deaths in a winterland deathscape.

The winter aspect of Black Phone 2 is visually equiste. It's a stark contrast to the original movie which was pretty much this dark, dingy nightmare but here it's cold, it's dark and it is cold. Snow fills the screen in abudance and what follows does take some time to get going in what is quite a slow and meandering setup for The Grabber's imminent return. Finn comes to learn that The Grabber is far from dead as he now haunts the dreams of his sister Gwen quite viciously infact. It sets off a chilling (pun intended) second and third act as the fight for survival begins.

Black Phone 2 is a worthy follow up in some places and not so much in others. I wish it didn't spend as much time setting things up as when it gets going it really gets going. The Grabber is a lot more visceral this time around as the origin of the man behind the mask is told in various dreamscapes. Ethan Hawke plays a way more angrier version of the character and given the setting it works well and overall Black Phone 2 is a pretty solid follow up to the original it just is a bit slow on the setup. That being said it does have a satisfying ending and wraps up all plot points pretty well. Cold and solid as a block of ice Black Phone 2 is worth checking out if you enjoyed the original.
