The Conjuring : Last Rites review

The fourth and final instalment in the Conjuring franchise has arrived and it is arguably the toughest case yet for paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is now 1986 and semi-retired doing book tours and giving talks at campuses both Ed and Lorraine have a grown up daughter who has inherited her mothers' sense of power. The movie begins in the past with the birth of their daughter and a mirror that will all play into what follows. After what was a really lackluster and quite poor third entry into the franchise the Last Rites is far superior in almost every way getting this franchise back on track and in a great position to close the book on Ed and Lorraine's story.

The story this time around feels a lot more personal as not only does it involve the Warren's daughter Judy. She is the core of the movie as the story revolves around her for the most part. And not just her more paranormal side as their is some family moments tossed in for good measure. As for the case well it's a demonic force terrorizing a family of 8 in a small home. Various things begin to happen i.e, floating dolls, lights flickering on and off and a scene involving blood spewing out of one of the children's mouths after a piece swolling a piece of glass. With the family at their wits end and after the death of a priest the Warrens take it upon themselves along with Judy to help the family and banish the demonic force within their home.

Like I said earlier this movie is far superior than the third entry but that being said it doesn't hold a candle to the original two movies either. It's a good watch but that's about it really. It does have an incredibly safe ending but one that feels warranted and deserved for the Warrens. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are brilliant as they've always been and overall The Conjuring : Last Rites is worth a watch if you're a fan of the series. If not then it's a decent thrill ride that while good isn't anything mindblowing.
