Materialists review

From writer / director Celine Song comes Materialists. A movie more so about dissasembling romance rather than putting it together. Starring Dakota Johnson as a young ambitious match maker in New York City who finds herself torn between what seems to be the perfect match and her ex boyfriend. Right off the bat it's clear that won't be your typical rom-com infact it's pretty much the opposite of a rom-com in many ways as it really tries to be super intelligent and portrays it's characters with many flaws. The emphasis here really being on the rich-poor divide and high-end dating.

Dakota Johnson is excellent in her role and carries the movie with ease and a hint of grace even if you're supposed to be rooting for her you sort of feeling yourself really hoping for her character to succeed in both life and in love. Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans play fill out the romantic triangle as two characters who couldn't be anymore opposite if they tried. Both do a great job with Evans in particular showing a much more softer and nuanced side.

I loved Materialists I really did. It's message is clear as it really focues on the value of people and touches upon some heavy subjects when it does come to dating. After Celine Song's last movie Past Lives I expected her follow up to not disappoint and it did not one bit. This is a fiercly written movie with compelling characters, story beats and performances all culminating in a quite exquiste piece of cinema. Brilliant!
