I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) review

I was never a big fan of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer if I'm being honest. In terms of slasher movies it was a ways down the list paling in comparison to let's say Scream. With that being said it's not almost 30 years later and the Fisherman gets a reboot / sequel hybrid that tells a very similar story with legacy characters peppered in for good measure. If you've seen the original you know the story here, a group of friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident on July 4th. They flee the scene after calling the police and paramedics leaving beind a grisly scene. A year passes and so begins a wave of violence and tragedy as each friend is stalked and picked off one by one.

I always feel that characters are the most important part of a movie like this. A slasher needs likable characters you want to root for to survive and well this movie may have some of the worst characters I've ever seen. All really terrible people full of cringey dialogue and really ill timed comedic moments. Madelyn Cline is the stereoptypical 'queen' of the group and her performance is flat, uninspired and so very bland. The same can be said for everyone else here including returning characters like Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr who do little to nothing to help elevate everything else around them. Also the lack of any police activity and the lack of wanting to help the victims was so beyond odd that it was just bewildering to watch unfold.

I Know What You Did Last Summer 2025 is a poor, poor slasher. Besides a pretty decent twist it is so cringe worthy, full of lame kills and characters that border / cross over into becoming so annoying it's hard to take at times. I really didn't enjoy my time with this movie at all and who knows what the future holds for the franchise but as of right now it's pretty much dead and buried as far as I'm concerned.
