A Minecraft Movie review
Video game adaptations have been on the up recently. From the Sonic trilogy to the tremendous Last of Us TV show so with Minecraft can it continue this upward trend or should it have stayed where it belonged?? well...Jack Black stars as Steve a wannabe builder who discovers a portal to a mysterious world in a mine after finding two glowing cubes. Once inside he begins to build things, from houses to chests, to weapons to other various things. He also meets a dog friend whom he names Dennis and the two become the best of friends. All of Steve's good intentions are undone when he is captured and taken prisoner by a group of pig like creatures who want to take over the world which is known as the Over World. It's up to Steve and Dennis to hide the orbs that act as sort of the keys to this world. The setup is fine, it's pretty lackluster and the writing is very much aimed at a much younger audience which is fine but really it's just so uninspired and for a movie bragging about being crafty and creative it feels anything but.
Once we're in the real world again we're introduced to more characters including Jason Mamoa who is a down and out video game store owner who looks to be doing his best Macho Man Randy Savage impersonation. His performance is pretty flat and one note. Emma Myers of Wednesday fame is here too and she is fine, infact everyone here is fine and that's about it. Jack Black is as outrageously over the top as you'd expect and yes he does once again sing.
So in summary is A Minecraft Movie worth checking out?? in short I'd say no. Not unless you're a diehard fan of the video games and even then it sort of feels empty in a lot of ways. From the lackluster effects and really noticeable green screen to the silly sideplot involving an escaped villager in the real world. It's all flash but no real substance. A Minecraft Movie isn't truly awful but given it's source material and the otherworldy effect of it all it could've been vastly more creative. The kids will love it and that's about it.
