1) The Penguin - No other show this year blew me away as much as The Penguin did. Right from the get go I was locked in and boy did this show really over deliver. Firmly declaring itself as much more than just a mere spin off from 2022's The Batman movie this version of The Penguin was everything from that movie and more as Colin Farrell totally transitioned into the Kingpin of Gotham City. Also along for the chaotic ride was Cristin Millioti as Sofia Falcone and Clany Brown as Salvatore Maroni and they're all as incredible as it gets with all three putting in award winning turns in my opinion. It all culminated in a power struggle between crime familes with some paying the ultimate price. The Penguin is arguably the best DC / Comic book show of all time in my opinon and sits righfully so above everything else this year. 2) Superman and Lois - Another DC show I know but this one like Penguin is really very special. Not only was this the final season of the show but it was the final version of these characters we will be getting for what looks set to be a very long time with the imminent release of the new DC Universe. Season 4 of Superman and Lois featured 10 action packed emotional episodes that weaved together the most beautiful heartfelt story. With incredible performances from Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent / Superman and Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane this show was one for the ages and I don't think we'll ever see anything like it again anytime soon. For a bright and better tomorrow indeed.
3) Fallout - Ella Purnell was a huge name in the realm of TV this year from Fallout to Arcane and Sweetpea ( more on that later hint hint) but man was she at her best here in this adaptation of the hit video game series. When it comes to Fallout I'm not really the biggest fan of the games to be honest it's love it or leave it I'm not too pushed so when I started this show I was pleasantly surprised at just how impressive it turned out to be. Eveything from the wasteland above filled with entertaining and enigmatic characters to the deep bowels below of the vaults Fallout was a really good time filled with great action call backs to the games and more. With season 2 on the way at some point I now find myself genuinely excited to see what happens next.
4) Sweetpeat - Oh look it's Ella Purnell once again but this time in a vastly different role. Sweetpea tells the story of a young woman's descent into madness after the death of her father. Ella Purnell is absolutely superb as Rhiannon a woman who really doesn't make much of an impression on anyone as she seems to blend into the shadows a lot more. Raised in a difficult home and her school life being something truly horrible it all leads to her becoming a serial killer of all things in this British black comedy that while not perfect is thoroughly engaging and so enjoyable. There is a pretty solid story here and it bobs up and down until the eigth and final episode which ends on a cliffhanger as season 2 has since been confirmed. Overall Sweetpea was a pleasant surprise for me and I something I really did enjoy this year.
5) Shogun - Not something I intially had much interest in sitting down and actually watching buy by the time Shogun was over I was amazed not just by it's performance which were all sensational but also by the costumes, set designs and the way it was adapted into a show based upon it's legendary novel. Shogun is a true testament to everyone involved and and they deserve all the success they get and then some.
So there you have it, it's easy to see I didn't quite take in much TV this year but what I did manage to watch I genuinely loved. Starting in 2025 my aim is to delve much deeper into this form of media as there really is so many hidden gems just waiting to be uncovered I'm sure. I decided to make this list to accompany my top 5 favorite movies of 2024 so I hope it is the perfect side piece to that. On an ending note I just want to thank everyone who came to this blog this year and read it be that for a minute, two minutes or even if you read all the reviews which is insane but thank you it really does mean the world to me. Here's wishing you a Happy Christmas and blessed New Year. See you in 2025
