The Whale review

Directed by Darren Arnosfky The Whale stars Brendan Fraser as a morbidly obese online college teacher who is struggling with each passing day to just try and live. Every once in a while a performance comes along that just floors you and this right here is one of those performances. Brendan Fraser is simply breathtaking here. His performance is so good it reduced me to tears on more than one occasion throughout. It is raw, emotional and just utterly heartbreaking. The struggle of his character Charlie too is very sad indeed as he attempts to get to know his estranged daughter more before he passes away due to his increasing blood pressure and apparent heart disease.

The Whale is a truly fascinating movie to watch from beginning to end. It mainly takes place inside of Charlie's apartment over the span of a couple of days. The daily toil and trouble that Charlie goes through from getting in and out of bed, to the eating habits he has are disturbing to watch but you just can't take your eyes off the screen as Brendan Fraser's performance is just utterly captivating as I mentioned earlier. In some ways The Whale is more like a play as one character arrives speaks to Charlie leaves than another comes in and y'know it just really works for it as a whole as this near 2 hour movie felt like only a half hour to me. I was drawn in from the get go and by the time the credits rolled I sat there in the cinema composing myself and taking it all in.

The Whale is incredible. It's as simple as that. Will it be for everyone? no I don't think so. But it is a masterpiece of storytelling. Alongside Brendan Fraser is Sadie Sink and even though her character whom is the daughter of Charlie comes across as truly horrible deep down you sort of feel for her and want her to succeed in life just as much as her dad does and it is here where The Whale really hit me. The daily struggle of family life. Of love and accepting people for who and what they are. There's so much here to think about and admire. Brendan Fraser deserves the Academy Award for Best Actor come March 12th he really does. This is one you just must go and see!
