Supergirl 5x1 : Event Horizon review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Supergirl returns for a fifth season and after a season best in season 4 it has a lot to live up to. The episode begins with an out of control bus that ends up being stopped by Supergirl herself who is now sporting bangs. After stopping the bus she spots Lena who almost right away says that Kara is Supergirl and how she lied to her. Kara tries to explain herself but Lena punches her before the screen cuts to white. Lena was only using a VR simulation as a way to test her new tech which is being run by a new company named Obsidian North. Before I say anything else my theory already for this season is that Obsidian North is going to be a front for Leviathan who were confirmed to be this season's big bad. More fuel gets added to that fire as we're introduced to Andrea Rojas a strong business woman who we learn has bought Cat. Co off of Lena Luthor for over 1.2 billion dollars. I'm willing to bet that she is running Leviathan and will use Lena's power to further her end goal. More on Kara however and turns out that she is to get a Pulitzer Prize for her article exposing the President and stopping Lex Luthor. And while that is amazing Kara is struggling with other things as she struggles to come clean to Lena how she is Supergirl. Alex tries to get her sister to be brave but Kara keep backing out of situations with Lena. She even skips out on a lunch date as a distress call goes out from National City Museum. The distress turns out to be a shapeshifter who takes the form of a dinosaur. Supergirl and Martian Manhunter fight it off but J'onn gets hit bad with some mind paralysis which renders him useless. The dinosaur shifts it's shape again into Superman's escape pod of all things as various objects from Kara and Clark's adventures are on display at the museum. But what does the shapeshifter want with the pod?? well according to Brainy it could use it's power core to make something that isn't good at all. And it turns out it isn't good by any means as the shapeshifter who takes the form of a young girl for the most part uses everything they've gathered to build their own phantom zone projector. They unleash a villain named Midnight who after Supergirl shows up isn't here to fight her but instead J'onn J'onzz. The team fight her off and diminish her powers but she will be back for more soon enough.
Back at Cat. Co and new owner Andrea Rojas's plans to turn the company into a tabloid style paper doesn't go down well with employees at all. She says everything is about clicks these days and she will do what she can to change whether people like it or not. She also mentions how if people quit then they will be sued as they will be in breach of contract. She's a character that is so easy to hate and is already has the makings to be a great villain. Maybe not on the level of Lex Luthor but strong nevertheless. Soon after this Kara's big night out to get her Pulitzer Prize is upon us and at the party she finds Lena. Little does she know that Lena is introducing her but has a plan to unleash a file consisting of Kara's identity as Supergirl. She was going to reveal her identity to everyone in the room and online. But before she can get another word in Kara blurts out that she is Supergirl and this scene was just brilliant. Melissa Benoits's acting here is amazing as the sense of disappointment in herself for letting Lena in the dark about her being Supergirl for so long seems to really take it's toll on her. This leads to Lena cancelling the file sending. Interestingly enough we see Andrea in her office waiting for the file to be released but it never comes. As she says that the network be tested James walks in and quits his job. She say he will never work in journalism again but he says back that he doesn't really care. I guess this is how he will leave the show which makes sense in a way. Continuing at Kara's big event Midnight turns up again and forms a massive black hole in the middle of one of the rooms. J'onn gets sucked into it and with nothing to lose Supergirl goes in after him. Midnight gets cuffed as inside the vortex Supergirl rescues J'onn..barely. With Midnight defeated and Supergirl having gotten her new suit from Brainy complete with pants everything seems to be on the up once again.
The episode draws to a close at J'onn's PI office. Inside is the little girl from earlier who we know is a shapeshifter. Turns out this is J'onn's brother from last season's finale. He says that J'onn and his dad were evil and he will make his life a misery. J'onn says he has no brother before saying that if he is that he should prove it. They both rush at one another as kinetic energy flows around the room. I can't wait to see how this all unfolds. Back at Lena's office Kara arrives outside and says that now Lena know her secret she will never be left out in the cold again. Kara give her a watch that she can press anytime for help before flying off. Lena on the inside says that Luthor's are like scorpions to her AI. She says they are known to sting and when the time comes she will sting Kara. Lena enters the VR simulation one more time before the episode ends. So it looks like Kara is going to have her hands full this season. Andrea Rojas will seemingly attack the Kara Danvers side while Lena will fight the Supergirl side. Or at least that's what I hope will happen as I think that could make for a truly interesting dynamic. All in all though this was an enjoyable premiere episode. It was solid as a rock and carried on the ending of season 4 extremely well. Welcome back Kara it's so good to be in your company once again.
