Legends Of Tomorrow 4x9 : Lucha de Apuestas review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Legends Of Tomorrow finally returns after what has seemed like an age away. Beginning with Sara and Ava who learn of Mona's deception and plan to help the Konane (the werewolf / demi god creature) break free from the Time Bureau's clutches. Last time we saw her Mona ended up getting badly injured by the creature and first time we see her here she is in a hospital bed. Her parents walk in and argue how she's always in a fantasy world of her own. They walk out of the room arguing and this is when Gary walks in who had been sent by Ava to apprehend Mona. Gary says he's sorry and pulls out the memory eraser that the Time Bureau use. He is just about to flash Mona when she grabs it off of him and uses it multiple times on him. She tells him to take her place in the hospital bed before making her escape. On the outside she notices someone watching her from a distance. It's the Konane. The reunion is short lived however as they both run off being chased by a black van. Mona sends the creature into a period in time and closes the breach in front of him breaking the communication device afterwards. The people chasing her show up but it's just Ray, Sara and Mick who without any real hesitation shoots Mona in the neck. Ray is thrown by this but it's just darts used to knock out people which happens to Mona. Back on the waverider and Mona wakes up telling the story of why she helped the Konane escape. Men In Black entered the room where he was being held and subdued him. She says that the footage that the Legends have seen has been tampered with and that she is not lying. Soon after this Gideon mentions how someone who fits the description of the Konane has murdered someone in Mexico City 1961. So it's off to Mexico we go.
At Mexico City the Legends are introduced to El Lobo a ultimate fighting machine who is the top draw at a Lucha Libre company. Constantine who seems to really be a fan of sorts meets a former top draw who says that El Lobo is a fake who has taken everything from him and everyone else. Of course El Lobo is the Konane in a mask and wrestling gear who pummels opponent after opponent until he is victorious. After the guy Constantine talks to announces his intentions of challenging El Lobo to a match where the loser must unmask and never compete again Mona calls out to the creature. They're both soon reunited and share a oddly romantic night by a campfire. Back on board the waverider and Sara gets a call from Ava who finds out that she and the others have been helping the Konane and in turn history. She seems genuinely upset with Sara however who hangs up on her. Earlier in the episode Sara had told Zari to do some digging on the footage of Mona to try and see if it was indeed tampered with, and after doing some digging at the Time Bureau office's she learns that it has been tampered with. Bringing Nate into the situation she learns that the footage was deleted by none other than Nate's dad. One problem though, they need his dad's phone to restore the footage. This leads to one of my favorite parts of the episode as Zari and Nate play boyfriend/girlfriend as Nate's dad hosts an annual benefit. Nate's mom mentions grand kids in front of Zari and she gets all back offish which was funny. They eventually get Nate's dad's phone and turns out Mona was telling the truth. Men In Black did enter where the Konane was being held. Nate soon after tells Zari that he wants her to keep digging and learn of everything that his father has been up to. And so the mystery begins..
The episode comes to a close back in Mexico where El Lobo takes on the masked luchadore that Constantine has been training. The two eventually agree to a draw and celebrate in the ring. Of course all hell breaks loose as various Time Bureau agents show up to spoil the party. Constantine, Charlie, Mick and even Ray revel in the chaos which was hilarious. Mona and the Konane escape and return to the same spot around the campfire as earlier. But before the episode ends in a really unexpected way we see Sara and Ava coming to blows again. Ava's upset nature with Sara continues to ring through as she didn't inform that not only was she harboring Mona but the Konane also. She says she's done with tears flowing so I presume they're broken up which kinda suck as they've been my favorite couple on this show. Back at the camp fire and as Mona and the Konane are talking a loud bang is shot off. The Konane falls to the ground before we see a Time Bureau agent who for a second I thought was a young time travelling Hank Haywood (totally possible with this show) Mona screams that he murdered the Konane and while filled with rage turns into a werewolf of sorts. Complete with dodgy effects which don't look good at all the camera pans out and soon after we see blood being splattered across a tree. The episode ends as Mona stands over the Konane's lifeless body before saying there really is no happy endings. So overall how was this for a comeback episode?? I wanna say good but truth be told it just wasn't. There was some funny moments of course but none in the vain of last season which nailed all the jokes in almost every episode. The magical creature / Konane storyline is cheesey and while the wrestling aspect was cool here it didn't really offer anything really special. Constantine was underused, Charlie was underused, Ray, even Mick. The Sara / Ava storyline is the most interesting thing going on right now and that ending?? I don't know what kind of explanation they're going to give us for that. It's good to have Legends Of Tomorrow back but I really hope it improves next week and really kicks into gear the back half of the season.
