Mary Poppins Returns review

Set many years after the original movie Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel in which Michael and Jane Banks are all grown up and after not only their fathers passing but the passing of Michaels wife leaving him and his sister to look after his children Michael begins working at the same bank as his father. One morning lawyers come to his door and state that his home is in fear of being repossessed as he has failed to keep up on repayments of a loan that he got from the bank. They give him only 5 days to sort it out before him and his family will be on the streets. It's a simple set-up and one that honestly goes by rather quickly.

Having only watched the original Mary Poppins for the first time days before the release of it's sequel I have to say that I am very impressed. The original is an absolute classic and while this isn't perfect it almost is in every single way. Emily Blunt takes on the lead role this time around in place of Julie Andrews and she is splendid in the role. Perfectly cast she almost makes it look too easy at times. With a delightful voice and an intoxicating charm she fills in the role of Marry Poppins beautifully as her and the 3 Banks children go on many wild and wondrous adventures which transforms bath time into a trip beneath the ocean where they all see pirates, treasure and various visual delights and also a trip inside one of the Banks family treasured vases to help a struggling carriage rider fix his wheel before going to a see a music show, It's all incredibly charming and backed by some tunes that are catchy but nowhere near the level of the original in my opinion. That's not to say they are bad in anyway because they aren't but after seeing the original recently it's music has been stuck in my head all week long.
Mary Poppins Returns is a very worthy follow up to the original and something that is a must see especially over the holiday season. It's quite long clocking in at over 2 hours but don't let that distract you from the fun you are sure to be had with all the family. Mary Poppins is a fun and fantastical journey and is at it's core a really magical experience.
