Pitch Perfect 3 review

The Pitches are back (sorry that was terrible I know) for one final gig and while there is some great moments the bad and silly moments completely outshine them. First off I'll begin by saying that I love the previous two movies the sequel especially being my favorite it really turned the volume up to the max from the first movie and it worked so well. This 3rd entry tries to do the same but it fails on a lot of levels and at times doesn't even feel like a Pitch Perfect movie which is so unfortunate because I really expected more from this especially as it is the sendoff movie in the franchise.

And with that being said that brings me to my biggest issue with the movie it has no real identity. Sure it's filled with some charm from the previous two movies but besides that it tries to do a whole number of different things and it just flounders along. It actually felt a bit draggy at points only held together by the musical scenes which in true fashion are really good. But it's some of the dialogue in between that really hinders the movie as a whole. The riff off scene which is usually a big highlight of the movies hit a complete bum note and felt average at best and the editing of not only the riff off but some of the musical numbers felt really rushed and it impacted them so much as you could barely hear the actresses perform which wasn't good at all. There's way too much sound going on around and it just killed some of the vibe at least for me
Rebel Wilson's character's relationship with her father almost feels out of place and something that got tacked on. Some of the scenes she and John Litgow share are horrible and it's these scenes that really do drag this movie to a grinding halt which is really disappointing as I said the quality and polish of the first two movies is really good.
The performances are also another issue I have with this movie. Anna Kendrick is as lovable as ever and her voice is just incredible, Rebel Wilson is absolutely hilarious at some points but then just straight up annoying at others. Her character really is the definition of you either love or hate her. Hailee Steinfield is good but not as good as she was in the previous movie, something just lacked from her performance at least to me. I will say though that the final scene is a real joy to watch and in my opinion was the perfect send off for the Bellas. This really left me feeling considerably disappointed coming out of the cinema considering the quality of the two previous movies I think this really is a massive letdown. An okay send off for the Barden Bellas but I can't help but feel that they deserved SO much more.
