Supergirl 3x3 : Far from the tree review
Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
This week's episode starts off with a new intro. Similar to Arrow and The Flash's. Complete with the ''My name is Kara Zor El'' line. I felt they should have done this a long time ago but it's here now which is good.
We start off and see Kara & Alex in Kara's apartment discussing the upcoming wedding shower for Maggie and Alex before Jon arrives at their doorstep asking them to take care of the city while he goes away..they find out he's going back to Mars so Kara decides to tag along. There's a genuinely funny moment as Jon and Kara arrive at a warehouse and enter to find an old fashioned car which will act as their way to Mars. Just the banter between Kara and Jon makes this scene brilliant. As they leave the warehouse the car transforms into a ship and they are off to the red planet. More on that car later.
Alex's mom visits and has lunch with her and Maggie to which we learn more about Maggie's childhood and how she was basically shunned out by her parents, especially by her dad. He basically disowns her after learning that she was a lesbian even going as far as to kick her out of the family home and make her go live with her aunt. This was a really heart wrenching scene and even more so later as her dad comes to her wedding shower only to leave mid way through because he can't accept that his daughter betrayed him by becoming a lesbian. He tells her she can do and be with who she pleases as long as she keeps him out of it all. Totally just heartbreaking scene.
Jon and Kara arrive on Mars and meet a Miss Martian led resistance team. We learn that Jon's father is alive and has been kept as a prisoner for over 100 years. Jon goes to visit him and his father doesn't even recognize him as his mind is on block so he can hide away a location of a weapon that the White Martians want to control all that remain on Mars. I love any Martian Manhunter themed episode and this was definitely the best they've done on this show. The theme of reconnecting and disconnecting between Jon and his dad and Maggie and her dad was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at times.
This episode has a perfect balance between making you laugh and smile and making your heart hurt for the characters. Special shout out to that Supergirl scene when she arrives at the White Martian base in that car I spoke about earlier with Britney Spear blasting on the sound system. A laugh out loud moment for definite. Jon Supergirl and the resistance overcome the White Martians before Kara & Jon head back to earth with both his father and the mind bending weapon in tow. The episode ends as we see Jon and his father about to head home. Can't wait to see more of those two this season.
My words don't do this episode justice in my opinion this is probably one of if not the best EVER episodes of Supergirl. It handles everything right and the story flows perfectly. This is Kara Zor El flying at her absolute highest.
