Happy Death Day review

This movie starts with the usual Universal intro but it keeps going back and back like it's re-playing it over and over again. A nice little nod to the movie ahead. A small little detail sure but it made me smile.

We start off with the main character Tree Gelbman awaking in a dorm room on her birthday of all days much to her dismay. We're introduced to what will later become the somewhat love interest in this movie in Cory. Tree rushes out of the room and heads to her own place interacting with all her sorority members and room mate along the way. She's invited to a party later that night and while walking there she notices a musical box in a walkway under a bridge so as you would she investigates. It's at this time when she is killed by a masked killer and wakes up once again in the same bed in the same dorm room living the same day over again. This proceeds to happen again before she realizes something isn't quite right. There isn't all that much blood or gore in this which disappointed me to be honest. A splash of blood here and there wouldn't have gone a miss. In fact it would have added more to the movie and who knows this could be a 5 star review but nope. Nonetheless it's still a fun ride.

This is a slasher movie but not one like you'll ever seen or have seen before. It's not really all that scary but that doesn't matter at least to me as it makes up for it in the form of sheer enjoyment. It's also littered with so many funny moments throughout and the cast play it so well. Jessica Rothe the lead in this looks like she is having an absolute blast, as her attitude and whole demeanor changes throughout the movie. This may not be for everyone but if you like a good slasher that is sprinkled with some originality then go see this.

Happy Death Day may not be the best movie of the year in terms of sheer quality but it is definitely in the running for the most enjoyable!
