Project Hail Mary review
Based upon the book of the same name Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi space adventure epic unlike anything I've seen in quite some time. Ryan Gosling is incredible as a science teacher called Rylan Grace who wakes up on a spacestation with no memory of how he got there and what is going on. Waking up from a medically induced coma it's his job to figure out what is going on, how to get home (if he can) and ultimately stop a catalysmic event from happening as with each passing day the Earth is running out of solar energy and within 30 years almost half of the population on Earth will be wiped out as a new Ice Age approaches.
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller this movie is simply sensational on pretty much every aspect that a movie can be. It's funny, dark, emotional as really impactful as Gosling's astronaut meets an Alien from another planet that is suffering from the same fate as Earth. The two begin to work together after a long process of trying to understand each other in really playful and entertaining ways. The way the camera pans and twists and turns in scenes is sublime and visually it's just breathtaking to watch unfold with the emptyness of space and it's big black barren nothingness on showcase. The real highlight however is the relationship between Gosling's Grace and the alien whom he names Rocky. It's totally believable, effortlessly funny and really heartwarming to see the bond grown between the pair.
Project Hail Mary isn't just the best movie of 2026 so far it is to sci-fi / space movies as to what The Godfather is to crime movies it is THAT good. My words really don't do it the justice it deserves as it's almost 3 hours long while feeling like just a handful of minutes. It's refreshing to see such a big blockbuster movie deliver on this level. I cried, I laughed, I was shocked and I applauded when it was all said and done. This is what going to the movies is all about!
