Marching Powder review

Image
Meet Jack Jones a football holigan, drug addicted larger lover. Played by Danny Dyer he is a lovable loser whose life consits of fights, time with the wife and kid and plenty and I mean plenty of drug and boozed filled nights out with his mates. That all changes when he gets arrested after a massive brawl and given 6 weeks to turn his life around or he'll be sent directly to prison. Will he be able to turn his life around and be a good husband and father?? Danny Dyer is utterly brilliant here as Jack. It's a role pretty much tailor made for him and his performance is equal points hilarious as it is poignant and understated. It's also got a very meta idea going for it as at various points Jack speaks to the audience in many fourth wall breaking moments. Let's be straight here though Marching Powder is very rude and it is crude but underneath it all lays a beating heart one full at times love and at others hatred. Marching Powder is a hilarious romp that is sure to ente...

Mickey 17 review

Image
From the Director of Parasite Bong Joon-Ho comes Mickey 17 about life, colonisation and a real strive for supreme power in a movie that is as bonkers as it is profoundly fascinating. Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey's 1 through 17 (and 18) a man on Earth who along with his best friend are forced to flee after they fail to pay back money to a loan shark that is not to be messed with. Mickey becomes something called an 'expendable' which essestinally means he becomes a guinea pig for a giant corporation who are attempting to colonise an ice like planet filled with creatures called creepers. He is used as a testing tube for various viruses to help create vaccines and make the planet breathable. Each death becoming more and more erratic and quite visceral.  Right off the bat Mickey 17 proves it's uniqueness in Robert Pattinson's voice alone as it is so weird yet so comforting to listen to. The first act is basically a tutorial of how the whole situation works as we se...

The Last Showgirl review

Image
The Last Showgirl is a story about womanhood, striving to be successful and the shortcomings that come with said fame. Pamela Anderson stars and is utterly breathtaking as Shelly as once celebrated and audacious star of Las Vegas showgirls fame. Now a lot older her world is turned upside down when the show she and many others perform on gets cancelled she has only a couple of weeks to wrap it up and it takes it's toll as it has been her life for so many years. It all conincides with Shelly's daughter coming back into her life after so many years apart.  The Last Showgirl isn't going to be your perfect story of fame, fortune and everything that comes with it, instead it is a rather tepid and tender look at the latter ends of someone's career in a industry that is always changing and morphing into something Shelly doesn't even recognize any longer. Also along for the ride here are Jamie Lee Curtis whose performance is pretty good for the most part, it's kind of ...
