Joker Folie à Deux review

Back in 2019 Joker was unleashed to the world. It was the performance of a lifetime by Joaquin Pheonix that not only claimed him every single acting accolade but the movie also drew in over 1 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Fast forward 5 years and a sequel has finally arrived so will it live up to it's now infamous predecessor?? Arthur Fleck now incarirated after killing 5 people in the first movie is awaiting trial for his violent, vicious crimes. He doesn't talk or interact with anyone in prison only to sometimes maybe tell a joke to get a cigarette in return. Arthur's entire life and purpose changes when he meets one Lee Quinzel while in a music theraphy class. A broken, mishapen tale of love, deceit and heartbreak follows in what was certainly not the traditional Joker and Harley Quinn chemistry or pairing.

Music. We all love it, it speaks to people on so many levels so when this movie was announced to be a musical at first I was very skeptical myself but after now seeing the movie I really feel like Todd Phillips and everyone else involved really understood what they were doing completely. Arthur's life has very little meaning thus he escapes from reality through music and song. The various musical numbers are energetic, mesmarizing and simply brilliant. As for Lady Gaga she too is fantastic here throughout in a version of Harley (Lee) Quinzel that is a far cry from the Margot Robbie or animated versions of the character. She's very dark, very deciteful and a truly strange enigma. Her and Phenoix are an electric pairing in both the many drama filled scenes and the musical numbers.

Joker Folie A Deux is certainly not going to be for everyone. If you don't like musicals then this just won't be for you as it does feature music elements very heavily. At it's core the entire Joker saga has been a tragic tale of a man's mental illness leading to him committing heinous acts but ultimately facing up and taking what comes his way. It's a far cry from the comic book version of the Joker but that's okay as this is an interpretation unlike any that's come before and probably after. If this is how the Joker movies have to end then I can't see a more fitting way to go out. Joker Folie A Deux is a masterclass in filmaking and taking an established comic book character and turning it into something disturbingly poetic. Brilliant!
