Civil War (2024) review

From writer / director Alex Garland comes Civil War which is set in a dystopian America where a team of military-embedded journalist races against time to reach Washington D.C. before rebel factions desend on the White House to take out the President of the United States. Alex Garland's past work is pretty much nothing short of spetacular so hopes were high for this movie and it's easy to say that Civil War is as fantastic as it is harrowing and adrenaline fueled. Starring Kirsten Dunst and a star performance from Cailee Spaney Civil War's opening of a chaos infused America sets things up perfectly.

What follows is a long road trip to D.C. where along the way all manner of things happen and go wrong from looters and shooters to a truly terrifying standout between the group and two armed soldiers. Alex Garland's ability to craft and deliver scenes like this is second to none and it shows once again here that he is one of the best working today. Performance wise Civil War is great and brings to light the real harsh truth of what the world could possibly come to one day. It's scary stuff and isn't exactly pleasent viewing for the most part but that's what makes it so good. It's real, uncut and as authentic as it comes.

Civil War is fantastic, after a pretty slow beginning it shoots adrenaline into you at such a fast paced that it's kind of unrelenting. The final 40 minutes or so are some of the best scenes put to film in quite some time leading to a tragic ending that I didn't see coming. Alex Garland has nailed it once again as Civil War is a must see on the biggest screen possible. One of 2024's best movies thus far!
