The Super Mario Bros Movie review

I love the Mario series. Apart from Spyro it was the very first video game series I ever played. I immediately fell in love with the characters, world and addicting gameplay. From Mario 64 to Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy it was an epic series which really molded me into the fan of video games I am today. When this movie was announced I was skeptical to begin with but once the trailers arrived and I got to see it all for myself on screen I was in, I was all the way in. The Super Mario Bros Movie isn't exactly your traditional Mario story of rescue the Princess. This movie adds so much more depth to lore and overall story of Mario and his brother Luigi. Set in Brooklyn both Mario and Luigi are plumbers who set out on their own to form their own business. Things take a turn for them however while on a job attempting to stop Brooklyn from flooding they both get sucked into a warp pipe getting separated. It's a simple setup but it's oh so good.

Firstly I got to talk about the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon Mario's arrival it is evident to see just how much detail and love was poured into this movie by both Nintendo and Illumination. It really is a love letter to fans of the series as visually it's just outstanding but what takes it to the next level entirely is all the little details and musical chimes littered throughout.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is an absolute blast for all of the family. Packed to the brim with easter eggs to past games and characters. The cast do a stand up job that does include Chris Pratt who is a truly terrific Mario here. But it's Jack Black who steals the show as Bowser. He is genuinely menacing but also has a much softer side I wish there was more of him as his scenes are among the best. As for everyone else well they're good too. Anya-Taylor Joy is just wonderful as Princess Peach. She's got a big heart and will do anything to protect her kingdom. It's actually the most fearsome she's been portrayed and I really loved seeing this side to her character. Charlie Day as Luigi is fantastic and the bond both him and Mario have is the true core of the movie. If you're a fan of Mario in anyway you should check this out. It's fun, it's heartwarming and a true love letter to fans of the series. Nintendo and Illumination have a hit on their hands!
