Crawl review
With a movie like Crawl you've gotta have two things. Interesting characters and plenty of tension. Thankfully Crawl succeeds on both those accounts. Starring Kaya Scodelario Crawl's premise is pretty simple. Kaya is a young woman called Haley who after years of training to be a competitive swimmer with her dad by her side gets a call from her sister to say that he hasn't been returning her calls. This all coincides with an announcement of a category 5 hurricane set to hit the area very soon. So Haley takes it upon herself to go and look for her dad at her old family house. Unfortunately it's far from home now as both her parents have divorced and her mom is already seeing someone else. Upon arrival after disobeying orders of the local police advising her to not go any further Haley arrives at her family home and what she finds is not what she expected at all..
Directed by Alexandre Aja Crawl is a tension filled creature feature that will easily please. Kaya Scodelario is absolutely stellar and carries the movie (literally) at times. She is strong. confident and in her father's words an Apex Predator. For the most part it is only her and her dad played by Barry Pepper on screen. But they aren't alone below their family home as not one but two giant gator's invade the crawlspace below the home. What follows is over an hour of action packed, tension filled moments that are helped by it's atmosphere, and as the movie goes on the tension only gets stronger as Haley and her dad fight for their lives to survive amidst rising water levels inside and a rising body count on the outside.
So in a nutshell Crawl isn't anything mind blowing but it does offer a nice bite (pun intended) it's running time is also perfect and it's pacing overall is good. The performances are great, especially how for the most part it's just 2 actors on screen. All in all Crawl is enjoyable but don't go in expecting anything mind blowing. Just enjoy the experience and thrill ride that lays in wait for you.
