Venom review

Image
Being as big a Spider-Man foe as he is you wouldn't expect Venom to get his own movie let alone one that isn't set inside the MCU. But 'Venom' has arrived and it is certainly a mixed bag. Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock a reporter who has a great life honestly. He's got a great job and he's engaged to be married to the love of his life. As he is given a new assignment by his bosses he is asked to report on a company named Life Foundation and it's chairman who by all accounts is not a very nice guy. Brock agrees and this is where his life completely spirals out of control as during the interview he accuses the movie's main antagonist Carlton Drake of a whole host of criminal activities leading to Eddie losing his job, his fiance and ultimately his entire life almost. The set up is fine but for the most part it just plods along until Eddie meets the symbiote about 30 minutes into the movie and it just takes off from there. Tom Hardy's performance ...

Crazy Rich Asians review

Image
Best on the best-selling novel Crazy Rich Asians follows the story of a young native New Yorker named Rachel Chu who journeys to Singapore to meet her boyfriends family. At it's core Crazy Rich Asians is a story about love and family and all the craziness that comes along with that. It's entirely refreshing as it really delves into it's characters backgrounds as the movie progresses along. The two main cast members Constance Wu (Rachel Chu) and Henry Golding (Nick Young) are really impressive here. Especially Wu who is as lovable as she is passionate and ambitious. Golding on the other hand plays his part much cooler and the two both share a really good on screen connection together.  Along for the ride are some old friends, crazy relatives and everything else you'd associate with one's family. But it's the character face off between Wu's Rachel and her boyfriend's mother that was the best part for me. Not wanting just an ordinary girl from a poor...

BlackKkKlasnman review

Image
Based on true events BlackKkKlansman follows the story of Ron Stallworth. An African-American police officer from Colorado USA, who manages to successfully infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan with the help of a white surrogate who eventually ends up becoming the head of the branch. Starring Adam Driver and John David Washington BlackKkKlansman is a strong and deep delve into the cult. Directed by Spike Lee it really leaves little to the imagination as it depicts the group's history background and members and is overall a really enjoyable and interesting experience. Both John David Washington and Adam Driver play the character Ron Stallworth. Washington does the talking over the phone to get into the Klan's good books while Driver shows up to meet the members in person. And boy oh boy are some of these members terrifying. Especially one member named Felix who is constantly on top of Ron in the flesh as he is convinced he is a jew. This leads to him becoming easily the most fa...

Christopher Robin review

Image
Based around the stories of Winnie The Pooh and his friend Christopher Robin this movie almost feels like a complete overhaul of the original classic tale. It tells the story of Christoper Robin played by Ewan McGregor who after growing up and having to deal with real life situations forgets his past friends as the real world begins to fully take over his life. He has a good job, he's married and he has a daughter but all he seems to care for his is work. And just as he is about to head away to his old cottage with his family he is tasked by his job to come up with cost cutting measures in order for the company to survive. This causes Christopher to pull out of the planned trip thus leaving his wife and daughter to go on their own. As they set off work takes a strong hold of Christopher and one day as he takes a moment to himself he sits on a park bench, but soon after behind him appears his very old friend Winnie The Pooh. Pooh tells him why he's here and it turns out all C...

Ant-Man And The Wasp review

Image
I really enjoyed the first Ant-Man movie. At the time of it's release it felt like such a breath of fresh air into the MCU. It had a solid lead in Paul Rudd and showcased the character of Ant-Man off in a really cool way that wasn't seen in any of Marvel movies beforehand. But with it's sequel which introduces some new characters can it keep the good times rolling? well yes and no. At times Ant-Man And The Wasp is hilarious with some really impressive action sequences which involving shrinking down into miniature sizes and literal body expanding between our hero's Ant-Man And The Wasp. But at other times it's painfully not funny with some really forced jokes that didn't manage to even raise a grin. The cast are really good throughout here as Paul Rudd again is brilliant as Ant-Man and Evangeline Lily is also good as The Wasp and the two really share a nice dynamic together as we saw in the first movie. With a returning Michael Douglas and Laurence Fishburne...

Mission : Impossible - Fallout review

Image
Mission Impossible Fallout is the sixth entrant into the franchise and it may well just be the absolute best yet. Tom Cruise returns once more as Ethan Hunt an IMF agent. This time racing against the clock itself after a job goes horribly wrong and nuclear weapons fall into the hands of strong and powerful enemies who plan on using said weapons to wipe out 1/3 of the worlds population. So it's up to Ethan Hunt and his team to once more save the day. That's the story and it's simple in it's premise but it's the action scenes that keep people who love this franchise coming back for more with each installment. Now you'd think with this being the sixth entrant into the series they'd be wearing thin on ideas for the action sequences but boy oh boy you would be so wrong. Tom Cruise is superhuman and puts in an incredible effort throughout here. He's riding a motorcycle through a crowded Paris motorway, jumping out of a plan at 20 thousand feet, he's da...

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again review

Image
Based on the hit stage musical and all those classic ABBA songs. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a follow up from the original 2008 movie and builds upon it so well. The story follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who along with her dad, husband and others sets out to fulfill her mother's wish of reopening her hotel in Athens Greece. But that's only one side of it all as on the other you have the story of Sophie's mom played by Lily James (And Meryl Streep in the original) and all blends together really well in quick edits combined with those amazing ABBA songs that will have your foot tapping and tapping cheering for an encore at times. The story and characters are completely fine here as really it's the songs and the choreography that'll keep you coming back and wanting more. That being said there is some pretty impressive performances mainly from Lily James who really nails a young Donna (Meryl Streep) in almost every aspect. She's adventurous, well spoken and...
