Toy Story 5 review
I love Toy Story, who doesn't really?? as a now 30 year old man I grew up on the original two movies especially. And while a third followed to which some say should've been the end of Toy Story and sure there is an argument to be had that it should've given how perfect of a note it ended on but that's not how Hollywood does things but that being said Toy Story 4 I really did love and now 5 is here, does it live up to the strong standard of the legendary series?? Toy Story 5 begins with an army of washed up Buzz Lightyear toys that at first glance seemed like they're being set up to be the overarching villain of the movie but as things go on it becomes more apparent that they're integral to the plot and they do offer a satisfying conclusion and final act that is effortlessly charming and heartwarming in true Toy Story fashion.
The real meat and potatoes of Toy Story 5 is the battle of wits between Toys and Technology (tech) the Toys world comes crashing down when technology begins to take control of kids leading to the days of playtime becoming a thing of the past. So when the toys owner Bonnie gets her own tablet named Lilypad it's up to Jessie, Buzz and the gang to try and make Bonnie a real friend, but can they succeed and without Sherrif Woody?? right off the bat I got to say that this is very much a Jessie movie. The plot mainly revolves around the cowgirl delving deep into her past owner, her relationship with Bonnie, Buzz and the others and ultimately her attempt to get Bonnie a new friend named Blaze who like her still plays with toys and technology.
Toy Story 5 is brilliant from beginning to end. It's funny, energetic, and packed with great characters and animation that feels so clean especially certain sections during playtime where it poses an almost watercolor effect that is so unique. New toys including a potty trainer tech device called Smarty Pants voice by Conan O Brian absolutely steals the show bringing energy, hilarity and a real sense of tech and toys connecting. As for everyone else they're all here, Jessie is the main character here there's no doubt and while Woody is here he and Buzz play a supporting role but they also do very heavy lifting of their own in various call backs to the original movie especially. Not only is Toy Story 5 better than 4 in my opinion it rivals the original trilogy in quality and teaches a couple of really important life lessons along the way too. One of the year's best movies thus far!
