Backrooms review
Based on the hit youtube short series and video game Backrooms is all hype and hot air but is it really any good? Backrooms is a real slow burn horror as it follows a therapist and her patient. Her patient a man with alchohol problems and the owner of a failing furniture store. Inside the store lays dormant an unknown space beyond a wall in the basement. Once inside we see that it is nothing but room after room with little tweaks here and there. It's not long however before something sinister is felt leading to loss, confusion and an attempt to get in and save someone.
I've never played the game of Backrooms nor seen the shorts and other media but I really did dig the vibes and asthetics of it all. From it's almost visceral color pallete to the true mystery of the Backrooms themselves but after what is a really solid first and second act it all just falls apart at least for me. It becomes more silly than anything or real horror or threat unfortunately all culminating in a finale that is more funny than anything else.
All in all Backrooms is a fascinating movie it really is but it's also equal parts nosensical and menotonus as it's most definitely not for everyone. It's quite one note at times and the acting is really subpar which is unfortunate given the two leads are two great accomplished actors. It may have been directed by the creator of the Backrooms but that does nothing at least for me as it all ends on a rather flat note. Plot holes and lack of explanation really hurt this one and leaves it one of the most disappointing movies of 2026 thus far!
