The Strangers Chapter 2 review

Image
The Strangers Chapter 2 has arrived aftet 18 months since Chapter 1. With so much time passed in between movies you may have forgotten what happened but the movie does an okay job at recapping as it picks up pretty much where the original movie ended with protagonist Maya who having just survived the whole ordeal of the first movie is in hospital and is in pretty rough shape. Upon waking up she is told about her fiance's demise at the hands of three ruthless killers who attacked them without any warning or reasoning. With Maya now exposed and all alone in hospital it's not long before her night turns from nightmare to an even bigger one as the Strangers turn up at the hospital hot on her tail once again.  What follows is an overly ambitious meandering horror / thriller movie that has some good stuff going for it but for the most part it just feels so barren and really bare bones with it's plot. The first 30-40 or so being mainly a chase sequence was utterly fascinting but...

One Battle After Another review

Image
The latest movie from Paul Thomas Anderson has finally arrived and not only is it one of the year's absolute best pieces of cinema it may very well be one of the best movies to come along in quite some time. From stellar performances and writing to visuals and pacing it's an absolute masterclass in filmmaking. The story revolves around a group of revolutionaries who take it upon themselves to take the fight against the military. What follows is wild, bombastic and highly entertaining movie that is without question Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnum Opus in my opinion.  Leonardo Dicaprio stars as one half of a two person revolution. Once the plan to assert their dominance gets derailed both Dicaprio and Teyana Taylor find themselves in a battle of survival and espionage as Sean Penn's Colonel Lockjaw is hot on their tails. After giving birth to a child 16 years past and now having a grown up daughter an old enemy resurfaces leading to one battle after another hence the titl...

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey review

Image
Meet David and Sarah. Two people who couldn't be anymore against commitment. Their paths cross when both attend the same wedding where they embark on an emotional journey of self discovery, loss and maybe, just maybe a path to true love. All led by a mysterious car rental company and a speaking GPS both David and Sarah are guided to specific points in their lives from the past, present and future. Will they find love together or drift apart completely?? Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie star as David and Sarah and while they don't quite have the best chemistry here I really did find myself rooting for them to end up together once the movie came to an end. It's testament then to a movie that is full of cliche moments but there is just something that utterly captivated me throughout. From David learning about his parents love for their son to Sarah's distain for missing the passing of her mom it's all woven together really well and does quite pack the emotional punch. ...

Caught Stealing review

Image
The latest movie from Director Darren Arnofsky comes a dark comedy / crime drama starring Austin Butler as a former baseball prodigy who finds himself caught up in a web of lies, deceit, murder and money. Right off the bat (pun intended) Caught Stealing gets underway and for the rest of it's runtime is pretty much unrelenting. It's fast paced, visceral, hilarious and packs quite a punch. Also starring Zoe Kravitz and Matt Smith who really steals the show here as an over the top punk rocker Caught Stealing is pure popcorn entertainment at it's finest.  I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Austin Butler ever since Elvis he just really hasn't impressed me at all and well that changes here..big time. His performance is electric and he is very likable even if he too is a flawed character you just can't help but find yourself rooting for him. Special mention must go to Matt Smith however who is chaotic and hilarious. His performance is downright bonkers as he brings t...

The Long Walk review

Image
The Long Walk the latest adaptation of a novel from legendary author Stephen King has arrived. Set in a dystopian America ruled by a regime a walking contest known as 'The Long Walk' takes place annually with the sole winner getting a cash prize alongside a single wish. The participants are for the most part teenagers known as ''Walkers'' who must maintain a speed of at least three miles per hour or risk execution by gunshot. What follows is a dark, bleak and utterly depressing movie that is not only all of the above but it is entirely gripping and emotional too.  Starring Mark Hamill as the regime leader The Long Walk is more so a story about brotherhood more than anything else really as our two main characters Rayman and Peter. They're the vocal point of the movie in a story that all comes down to one question how far could you go?? and that is put to the test almost right from the get go as this movie doesn't take long at all to really get going and...

Honey Don't! review

Image
The team behind Drive Away Dolls are back and this time with a movie that quite literally has nothing going on in it that is anyway exicitng. Margaret Qualley stars as a private investigator tasked with finding information on a woman who has been found dead seemingly after a car crash. But it's not just this case she juggles as various things begin to happen all tieing back to a mysterious Church which is run by a charismatic ego driven lunatic played by Chris Evans. After Drive Away Dolls which I really loved I went into this movie expecting quite the similar experience but as a whole Honey Don't! really didn't do anything for me. Everything from the setting and peformances feel dead and redudant. The only true highligh being Qualley's will they won't they (they definitely won't) relationship with a local police officer played by Charlie Day.  With Ethan Coen behind the camera and on writing duties you'd expect quite a quick and witty story full of silly ...

The Conjuring : Last Rites review

Image
The fourth and final instalment in the Conjuring franchise has arrived and it is arguably the toughest case yet for paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is now 1986 and semi-retired doing book tours and giving talks at campuses both Ed and Lorraine have a grown up daughter who has inherited her mothers' sense of power. The movie begins in the past with the birth of their daughter and a mirror that will all play into what follows. After what was a really lackluster and quite poor third entry into the franchise the Last Rites is far superior in almost every way getting this franchise back on track and in a great position to close the book on Ed and Lorraine's story.  The story this time around feels a lot more personal as not only does it involve the Warren's daughter Judy. She is the core of the movie as the story revolves around her for the most part. And not just her more paranormal side as their is some family moments tossed in for good measure. As for th...
