Until Dawn (2025) review

Image
Based upon on the hit video game of the same name Until Dawn isn't a like for like adaptation of the game no, instead it is more of an origin story so to speak. The story follows a group of friends who while out searching for one of them's sister who has gone missing in a secluded area end up inside a house where a time loop takes form leaving them with no choice except to survive until dawn. The setup is simple and it kinda of meanders until the group get to the house but once inside it is where the movie is at it's best and revelations come to life and creatures and looming forces begin to manifest.  I played the game way back in 2015 and absolutely loved it then and with a recent rewatch of the games story in preparation for this movie I really enjoyed it again. I was sort of not looking forward to this before seeing it but truth be told this did surprise me. It's full of everything the game is with a little bit more thrown in like the time loop which is such a fas...

Sinners review

Image
Director and Writer Ryan Coogler's latest movie is Sinners a story about power, corruption and vampires. Coogler of Black Panther fame once again teams up with Michael B Jodan which not only gives him one but two roles of a lifetime. Set in 1932 Mississippi Sinners tells the tale of twin brothers both played by Jordan who return to their home to start again after the war. They attempt to set up shop in their home by getting together all sorts of people from singers to a young pastor's son who is a up and coming blues prodigy together to have the night of a lifetime. It's a simple set up and even more so in what it does but where Sinners really shines is the way it builds and builds until a heart pounding last act.  Michael B Jordan is absolutely fantastic here as twin brothers Stack and Smoke. He plays twin brothers sure but they really couldn't be anymore opposite in their approach to so many things that they do. The way they bounce off one another is fantastic and n...

Drop (2025) review

Image
Director Christopher Landon has been on quite a roll in the past decade or so when it comes to horror / thriller movies. From being the Director of the Happy Death Day duology to his writing efforts like this years Heart Eyes. Now he is back in the Director's chair and with Drop he has crafted one of the most well made, highly intense and edge of your seat thrillers this year. Drop follows a widowed mother's first date in years at a high class resturant which takes a terrifying turn when she is bombared with threatening messages on her phone during the dinner date which leaves her questioning just who or what is behind it all.  Drop is an intense, really well made and directed thriller full of so many ups and downs it's pacing really is frantic. It jumps from scene to scene to scene in a timely manner leaving nothing behind only a sense of further dread for our main character Violet who is brilliantly played by Meghann Fahy. Her performance really is the glue that holds D...

Death of a Unicorn review

Image
A horror comedy like no other we'll probably see this year Death of a Unicorn is a trippy fascinating movie involving Unicorns, magic and a wavering sense of trying to do good for the world. Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd star as a Father / Daughter who while on the way to weekend retreat of his wealthy boss hit a Unicorn in the middle of the road. They don't kill the creature but injure it so much so that it begins to bleed a mysterious purple color. It's horn also glows which Ortega's character touches and upon doing so begins to see things in a very trippy and atmospheric way. The two end up putting the animal in the back of the car and go to the home where they think it's all over but in reality it's just beginning.. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega strike a good father and daughter relationship throughout here. It is rather cliche in the way they talka and interact but there is real love here and after the passing of Rudd's wife who is Ortega's characters m...

A Minecraft Movie review

Image
Video game adaptations have been on the up recently. From the Sonic trilogy to the tremendous Last of Us TV show so with Minecraft can it continue this upward trend or should it have stayed where it belonged?? well...Jack Black stars as Steve a wannabe builder who discovers a portal to a mysterious world in a mine after finding two glowing cubes. Once inside he begins to build things, from houses to chests, to weapons to other various things. He also meets a dog friend whom he names Dennis and the two become the best of friends. All of Steve's good intentions are undone when he is captured and taken prisoner by a group of pig like creatures who want to take over the world which is known as the Over World. It's up to Steve and Dennis to hide the orbs that act as sort of the keys to this world. The setup is fine, it's pretty lackluster and the writing is very much aimed at a much younger audience which is fine but really it's just so uninspired and for a movie bragging ...
