Companion review

From the writers from the best horror movie of the decade in my opinion Barbarian comes Companion a story about love, death and betrayal. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid star as a couple on a weekend getaway that turns bloody and chaotic when an AI Companion turns haywire. First of all just let me say that this movie isn't on the same level as Barbarian nor is it anywhere near the stratosphere of Barbarian. Companion is a pityful, unfunny quite lazy and uninspired horror / comedy satire about AI and the pitfalls of it.

I don't know where to even begin with Companion. Firstly the movie and it's 'twist' was totally ruined by the trailer totally ruining the main premise and underlining narrative. It felt like I had seen the majority of the movie before even actually seeing it. So I got problems with that, performance wise it's pretty poor too. I will say that Sophie Thatcher is fantastic though. Her cadence and the way she carries herself is easily the best part of the movie and she really makes you feel for her character. On the other hand Jack Quaid and his quote unquote 'friends' who are at the lakehouse where they're all staying are not at all likable. Now if that was done purposefully then fine but it really didn't do it for me and I just couldn't stand any of them really. It's a spoiled brat pack kind of group and for me it just fell flat on it's face.

Companion was such a letdown for me. Not one person laughed out loud during the screening I was with and if that's not telling then I don't know what is. With the people behind the scenes I really did expect another stellar experience. What I got was an unfunny, uninspiring and totally not original piece of horror / comedy. The question of AI in horror movies is fascinating however and like I said Sophie Thatcher is a major star in the making but overall I left Companion feeling so empty inside. Disappointing.
