Red One review

It's that time of the year again. Time for a feel good Christmas movie to be released and with that being said Red One is unleashed unto the world. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons Red One tells the story of Saint Nick (Santa Clause) being kidnapped and used to aid an evil Witch's plot to rid the world of all naughty children. Right off the bat it's evident that Red One is not one to be taken seriously as Chris Evan's character showcases his sluething skills as he inadvertantly aids in the kidnapping of Santa afrer giving the North Pole's location to the highest bidder. It's up to Dwanye Johnson's Callum Drift and Evan's Jack O'Malley who is a bounty hunter / dark web specilist to save Saint Nick and thus in turn save Christmas.

Dwanye Johnson and Chris Evans you'd expect them both to deliver here and while they do some moments just feel so forced and unfunny it feels a tad awkward at times. Some of the delivery of these moments fall short leading to no real sense of wonder of amazement as the movie rolls on. When the comedy does work ala when Johnson's character switches from normal sized man to a minature version of himself while fighting snowmen on a beach in Aruba it works wonderfully. When it doesn't work you're left with stiff moments and poor character interactions. What isn't poor here however is the character and make up designs of various mythical creatures. From Krampus and his various followers and the North Pole inhabitants to the previously mentioned evil snowmen it's all really well done and easily the best part of the movie.

So in a nutshell is Red One really any good and worth watching this holiday season?? in short yes. When it's funny it's really funny but it does have some things waying it down like a lack of really intense and fun action scenes and a villain played by Kiernan Shipka who is as one note as they come. J.K. Simmons as a jacked Santa Clause who delivers presents in the most athletic way I've ever seen Santa work is good here too I just wish there was more of him. In summary Red One is okay if a bit bland but it will warm you up somewhat this Christmas. Enjoyable.
