The Substance review

 


The art of body horror is quite an aquired taste. It's certainly not for everyone and that pretty much sums up The Substance which is arguably the grossest movie you will see all year. Starring Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley The Substance is a visceral, shocking and at times pure adrenaline filled cinema. The story follows Demi Moore's Elizabeth Sparkle who once was the brightest of stars in Hollywood and LA. Time hasn't been kind to her however and as she has gotten older her image has faded leaving her with next to nothing. Her entire life changes however when she his in a car accident and once she is out of hospital she finds a mysterious memorystick in her pocket with the name of The Substance on it. Once she goes home and sees what it's all about she is almost instantly hooked leading to a wild rollercoaster of a movie. 

Once The Substance is taken by Elizabeth Sparkle a younger more capable version of herself is born and when I saw born I really mean it as this movie's body horror is quite unlike anything else. Margaret Qualley simply bursts out of Demi Moore's back in one of the most awe inspiring things I've seen in quite some time. There is rules to follow with the main one being that both Elizabeth and the newly born Sue need to switch bodies once every 7 days without exception. With Elizabeth out of action Sue begins to take over pretty much all aspects of her life so much so that she even begins to steal extra time and days from her. It slowly but surely begins to take it's toll on Elizabeth's body which begins to spiral out of control with every second taken from her. 


The Substance is a bold piece of art. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are pretty much flawless each playing their role beautifully leading to a climax that needs to be seen to be believed, no trust me it really does. I also love how the movie is shot and showcased with some truly tough and lingering shots of not just body horror but even mundane things like people eating. It feels so unnatrual but I just couldn't look away. The Substance is easily one of the most original and creative movies of 2024 and deserves to sit high in the realms of body horror history.

Florence Pugh stars as Saraya Knight a young girl from Norwich England. Her brother Zak Knight played by Jack Lowden has one dream. Gotham 5x1 : Year Zero review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it Gotham finally returns for it's fifth and sadly last season and with a run of only 12 episodes there is a lot to get through and eventually wrap up. It begins on Day 391 of No Man's Land as the final battle for Gotham comes to a head as Captain Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Riddler and even Penguin all suit up and get loaded for combat as all men led by many more GCPD officers open fire from a top a massive wall as Jim Gordon says ''For Gotham'' this of course is going to be the end of the season but let's go all the way back to day 87 of No Man's Land where we see Gordon talking to someone on a radio. He explains the situation currently going on in Gotham. He says various villains have taken over their own terrirtorys for example The Penguin has taken over Gotham City Hall, Scarecrow has his own little area, Mr Freeze and Firefly are at war with one ano

The Flash 4x7 : Therefore I am review

Be warned there will be *SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it. This show does it again. I honestly have no idea how it can just go from last week's completely flat episode to this episode which was absolutely fantastic. It's just so frustrating because as I've said before this show as the potential to be better than all CW shows combined but given how inconsistent it is just bothers me.  Onto the episode and it begins after a first of many flashbacks to Devoe's past pretty much where it ended last week as Barry and Joe begin to question Devoe and his wife at their home. Devoe of course avoids all questions like a pro and Barry and Joe are forced to leave without getting any information. Later as Devoe is teaching a class at Central City University he once again sees Barry sitting in the back of the class watching on.
