Twisters (2024) review
The original Twister movie was a classic of it's time and it still is a very enjoyable diaster style movie. Fast forward to 2024 and we now have Twisters. More of a second installment rather than a full on reboot Twisters is a fantastic callback to old school summer blockbusters of old full of charm, over the top action and stunts and a really likable cast. Plot wise Twisters is pretty much the same as it's 1996 counterpart as a group of friends attempt to get inside of a moving tornado and read it's contents with technology. The movie starts off with an EF5 tornado and it's here where we meet the main character Kate who is a chaser of tornados. After a tragic accident some 5 years pass before she is called back into action by an old friend who needs help with a new way of reading tornados.
Daisy Edgar Jones stars as Kate and she is incredibly likable here as his Glenn Powell as a guy named Tyler a cowboy turned tornado wrangler as he deems himself. From live streaming his efforts to selling his teams own merchandise he too is very likable and charming in what turns out to be a rather sweet and endearing rom com element bubbling underneath it all.
Twisters is big and loud, it is bombastic and fun. It's tornado wrangling scenes are effortlessly thrilling leading to an ending that feels earned yet incrediblt dangerous. I honestly was not expecting to like this as much as I did. The cast are fantastic, the story is good and the visuals and tornados themselves are really well done. Twisters is pure popcorn fun and shows that true summer blockbusters do still exist. Highly recommended.
