Longlegs review

Every now and again a horror movie comes along being branded as the scariest and best of it's genre in decades. Longlegs falls directly into that bracket as both the marketing for this movie and the reviews before official release have been nothing but stellar. So with that being said just how is Longlegs?? well it's quietly creepy for sure but it fails to stick any form of landing at least not for me. Maika Monroe stars as a detective on the case of a mysterious serial killer who seemingly kills families without even being present when the murders take place. All that is left behind is the mutilated bodies of the victims and a series of notes with encrypted code on them.

Longlegs's opening really sets the mood right away and is absolutely bone chilling. It also sets up the mysterious killer played by Nicholas Cage perfectly. Everything from the way he speaks to his pale white skin to his entire face not being shown is so well done. After the opening the movie's pacing is rather good there is a couple of slow points that lead to nothing but for the most part Longlegs at it's core is a very solid detective driven story in a sense.

Nicholas Cage is the standout here. He doesn't have much screen time but he really does explode off of it every single time he appears. His demanor is beyond creepy and once he meets the detectives hunting him the face to face showdown is equal parts brutal and straight up frightening. Cut into three parts Longleg's first two acts are good to great but it's the final act where it all just fell apart for me. It goes full on demonic and focuses heavily on Satan and dealings with the Devil. That's not to say it's bad or anything but I feel if it stuck the landing on the ending we definitely could've had an all timer on our hands here. Longlegs is a tough movie to rate and crtique. It's a fascinating watch and something I will need to rewatch at some point. It's definitely worth checking out as I really think some people might adore it and some hate it. I fall directly in the middle and think it has some great things going for it but ultimately it just falls short. Cage is incredible that's for sure. Not bad but doesn't live up to the mega hype surrounding it.
