The Strangers : Chapter one review
The original 2008 Strangers movie was a fascinating horror movie. It felt fresh and unique at the time and still holds up quite well today. The sequel however which released in 2018 completely missed the mark and went down a more slasher type route which just didn't really work. So here we are in 2024 with a prequel to the original movie but not just a prequel it is the first part in a trilogy of movies. Our movie begins as we meet our two main characters Maya and Ryan a couple celebrating their 5 year anniversary. On a road trip around the country their car breaks down in a small town which immediately something feels off about.
Panic soon ensues when they are forced to spend the night at a local Air BnB as their car is being repaired. Said panic comes when Maya is left alone as Ryan goes to retrieve something from his car and get some food for them both. Sounds and creaks linger throughout the house as it's clear that there is something or someone inside the house. It turns out that 3 people are inside of the house but for what reason?? well because Maya and Ryan were there no other reason is given in a movie that is painfully average. It does have it's moments but overall it's just kind of there, The Strangers feel sort of threatening and in the end it does lead into what is to come but as a whole the ordeal isn't as terrifying as it could and should've been.
The Strangers : Chapter One sets up a trilogy in the most basic, bang average way. It does the bare minium but doesn't quite exactly make you feel excited for what is to come. The cast do a solid job and keep you interested throughout but overall it just isn't anything truly memorable. A somewhat enjoyable horror movie on it's own but nothing truly amazing in a year that feels really barren for horror apart from some gems. Not bad just don't be expecting anything mindblowing.
