Immaculate review

I was lucky enough to see this movie a week before official release. Immaculate stars new mega-star Sydney Sweeney and after the huge success of Anyone But You has she two genre hits on her hand?? the story of Immaculate isn't anything new or truly original. It follows Sister Cecelia (Sydney Sweeney) who after the closure of her parish moves to Italy to move into a new parish that is very strict and ruled over by an almost iron fist. Struggling to learn Italian to begin things soon take a dark turn and maybe all is not as it seems as bizarre things begin to happen around the convent but all nowhere near as important as Sweeney's character being with child as it is declared a miracle by all.

Sydney Sweeney is great here, you really feel for her. Her sheer panic and fear of what is happening around her is genuinely believable. She carries the movie and without her there wouldn't be very much here at all to be honest. It's full of cheap jumpscares, silent moments leading to jumpscares and overly done cheap tricks. That being said the final act is both thrilling and chaotic as it is dark and dreary.

Immaculate is pretty much a run of the mill horror but it is elevated somewhat by Sydney Sweeney's performance. I won't be forgetting the final moments for quite some time as it has stayed with me since I saw it all unfold before me. If you're a Sydney Sweeney fan you'll love this and be all in but if you truly love horror it really does feel somewhat empty and barren at points. Enjoyable just nothing special.
