The Marvels review

The original Captain Marvel movie was something at the time I really did enjoy so with this sequel can the MCU prove that Captain Marvel wasn't just a flash in the pan?? this time around Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is not alone as she is joined by the daughter of her longtime friend Maria Rambeau who was in the previous movie. Her daughter named Monica (Teyonah Parris) is all grown up now and is a Captain like her mother. Also joining them is Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) who last was seen in her very own show named Ms Marvel and right off the bat it is plain to see that she is going to be the star of the show here and she absolutely is. The energy she brings is unmatched and she legit blows everyone else away whenever she is on screen which is a big percentage of the rather short run time of well under 2 hours.

Now the MCU is know for great villains and some not so good and this falls into the latter unfortunately as well there is a reason for the villains purpose she just isn't interesting at all and is very much one note. The rest of the cast are fine Brie Larson a little bit wooden which was disappointing but it was nice to hear her sing again even if for a brief little bit upon an entire planet which only communicates through song. It is moments like these that really make The Marvels shine. It's visually great apart from some really dodgy CGI backgrounds but overall it looks good. That being said this is the grand space adventure it could've been with very little really going on behind the main story. The character development is fine but nothing of noteworthy really happens and the reason for caring about our three hero's is just thrust upon you. I did really like the concept of all of them switching places each time their powers were used as it made for some creative and chaotic fight scenes that felt fresh.

The Marvels isn't exactly marvelous or anything. It's quite bland and boring but there is something here it's just hard to pin point exactly what. Iman Vellani is truly wonderful and Ms Marvel is quickly becoming one of my favorite hero's post Endgame but as a whole it just didn't hit nearly as much is it could and should've. Not truly awful by any means but not want the MCU needed right now either.
