Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3 review

I loved the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Back in 2014 it felt incredibly fresh and vibrant. Fast forward to it's sequel and I felt like a lot of things that made the original so great were missing. So now with what is supposed to be the final chapter of this iteration of the Guardian's story will it be a grand farewell or a total flop?? Some time has passed since we last saw the Guardians who are now all together staying in a sort of makeshift village / shantytown. All that goes to utter waste when a strange being comes crashing in (literally) looking for Rocket Raccoon. All hell breaks loose leading to Rocket being badly injured with the only thing to save him being to lift a security bypass inside of him so he can be treated properly. Will the Guardians save the day and their friend??

Rocket Raccoon. This story is focused very heavily on him and to be honest it's one of the most emotional super-hero movies you're bound to see whether that be now, the past or in the future. Rocket's life has not been an easy one as he has been tortured and preyed upon by this movies villain The High Evolutionary who wants to create a perfect colony of human and animal hybrids. The scenes involving Rocket and his rag-tag group of equally disfigured friends are both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. They sprinkled around the movie as it's main core and it really benefits from this form of storytelling. As for everyone else they all do a great job here as usual as you'd expect. Dave Bautista's Drax once again being the major comic relief here but overall the tone is a lot more serious and the characters more deep and explored. This includes Peter Quill whose struggle with having to work with a woman who looks exactly like the love of his life as it really does take it's toll on him.

James Gunn has crafted an amazing story here on all fronts. The Rocket Raccoon backstory is tragic, the final mission of the Guardians of the Galaxy is big, bold and utterly bonkers and by the time the credits roll you'll fondly remember all the memories we've shared with them over the past 9 years. This is easily the best Marvel / MCU movie in some time and shows that when you have a good story with well developed characters you can pull off a truly epic comic book movie!
