Stargirl 3x12 : Frenemies - Chapter twelve : The Last Will and Testament of Sylvester Pemberton review
Be warned there will be SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
The second last ever episode of Stargirl has come and gone and with it we got a BIG twist involving Starman and a look at what is to come in next weeks series finale. The episode opens up decades in the past however as we're shown an actress named Dolores Winters winning an award. As we know from before this is one of Ultra-Humanite's body disguises. His brain is inside of this woman and has been for quite some time by all accounts. Dolores is loved by her peers and fans alike and after winning her award returns to her room where it's clear that Ultra-Humanite is meeting with someone. And indeed that is the case but not before he is interrupted by a fellow actor who makes his intentions clear. He is madly in love with Dolores which only angers her leading to Dolores Winters committing murder in cold blood. None other than Dragon King ( Dr Itoh ) soon shows up and talks about the Ultra-Humanite's next body..a rare just caught by a hunter Albino Gorilla. This was a great setup to the episode and by the end it would've all come around full circle.
Back in present day and we see Artemis who is still struggling with the death of her parents. She seems to be taking up their personas as she takes Sportsmaster's bat and balls and wears some of Tigress's gear. She gets interrupted by Sylvester who tells her that Jordan will pay for what he did but not by her hand..by his. If Artemis wants to honor her parents then she should go to college and be the absolute best version of herself that her parents raised her to be. So Sylvester is hunting Icicle then?? and all alone?? well yes and no as we'll soon see. Back at home and Pat and Sylvester come to blows about the whole situation. Sylvester really lays into Pat blaming him for not just his death at the hands of the ISA but also how Stripsey was the joke of the original JSA. It's a pretty harsh reality check for Pat as Sylvester shows no real remorse or anything.
The episode draws to a close as Pat ultimately ends up joining Sylvester on his hunt for Jordan armed with a flamethrower of all things. The two seem to make up but of course it's all short lived as Sylvester shows his true colors and betrays Pat knocking him out before placing him in a grave as we see him start to bury his 'friend' alive. It is here with everything just gets turned on it's head as we learn that this isn't Sylvester Pemberton at all. It is none other than the Ultra-Humanite. He tells Pat about how he wormed his way into his life by getting to know people who knew Pat and who were close to him. He also mentions how it was him who drove the JSA apart when it comes to Cindy as he very carefully pushed Yolanda to question Cindy. He also was the one who told Rick to remove the limiter on his hourglass which has changed Rick for the worse. It all has come together and in a big and beautifully written way. As for the Albino Gorilla and Jordan they're indeed working with Sylvester (Ultra-Humanite) as he has achieved his goal of bonding with the Cosmic Staff. The episode ends on a pretty somber note as it looks like Pat has been buried alive by Sylvester in the middle of the woods. Could this be the end for Pat?? unlikely but it's an insane ending that makes next weeks finale and last ever episode must see! this was a phenomenal episode from beginning to end with great character moments, writing and a overall sense of pure enjoyment leading it to being one of if not the greatest episode this season.
