Stargirl 3x9 : Frenemies - Chapter nine : The Monsters review

Be warned there will be SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.

After a short review last time out this weeks review of Stargirl will be a lot more in depth and man what an episode we've got here. It begins with Camerons grandparents who we see talking about their grandson and how he was told to not engage in art anymore. A photo of Courtney that Cameron drew is destroyed with ice and tossed aside. Speaking of Courtney both she and Pat are soon back home after a long time away in the Shadowlands for Pat and a trip to Helix for Courtney as she meet Mr Bones. What Pat saw in the Shadowlands is clearly troubling him as he tells all to Barbara. He mentions how he saw his father but that's not what really got to him. What got to him was Mike and how he feels like a failure of a father to him. Pat comes to the conclusion that Mike needs to meet his mother after she basically just up and left him and Pat with little to no real reason or want of them both. Doing this could be good for Mike but only time will tell. As Pat and Barbara talk downstairs upstairs Courtney and Yolanda finally get back on speaking terms and share a hug. The two talk about everything that's been going on and Courtney has something to ask of not just Yolanda but the rest of the JSA too, what could it be??

We're soon back with Cameron's grandparents as they're paid a visit by his art teacher from school. He is very worried and concerned about Cameron and him just up and leaving behind art class. He clearly has a gift for art says the teacher but before things can go any further Lily (Camerons grandmother) uses her ice powers to kill the teacher in cold blood impaling him with an ice pick. Lily is absolutely ruthless here and is a strong opposite to her husband. It's back to school after this as the JSA get together to talk about what Courtney has planned. Her plan? well to tell Cameron everything of course. Everything from what happened to his father, who she really is (Stargirl) and how the JSA are basically protecting Blue Valley. Rick objects to this as expected but eventually just agrees to have everyone's back no matter what but he ends with a warning. Don't say he didn't warn them all.

The episode draws to a close as Beth learns that the signal from the cameras is coming from none other than Cameron's grandparents home which just so happens to be where Courtney is also heading. As Courtney prepares to tell Cameron everything Rick busts through the door ready for a fight and it is here where one of the best fights in the shows entirety takes place between Cameron, his grandparents, Hourman, Wildcat and Dr-Midnite. It's a wild and vicious fight especially between Hourman and Cameron which is pretty brutal yet you can't take your eyes off of it. The fight ultimately comes to an end when Cameron's grandfather tells him to not let hatred and grief overcome him just like his father. Cameron stops in his tracks just before delivering the final blow to Rick much to his grandmother's annoyance as she is clearly driven by anger, hatred and grief of losing her son. This entire scene was sublime. Character driven and full of intense action and excitement this is Stargirl at it's absolute best and we're not even done yet. The episode ends with Mike and Jakeem who have been searching for Cindy all episode. They find a list of names with one final location that hasn't been crossed off. They arrive and it's an empty building. The Thunderbolt joins them as the three go deeper into the building but are suddenly stopped when they hear growling. They turn around and this isn't just a normal run down building this is where everyone has been watched from and we finally meet the murderer and it's none other than the Ultra-Humanite if you can believe it. A physically strong and mentally brilliant Gorilla who says he is going to kill them all as the episode cuts to black. What??! this was an absolutely insane reveal and one I was not expecting at all. The recent news of Stargirl being cancelled after this season hurts even more after a reveal like this. Overall this episode was truly fantastic from beginning to end. Full of great scenes, memorable action scenes and a WTF reveal. This is Stargirl at it's absolute best like I mentioned earlier.
