Stargirl 3x5 : Frenemies - Chapter five : The Thief review
Be warned there will be SPOILERS* involved in this review. With that being said let's get into it.
Stargirl returns from it's week hiatus with an interesting episode to say the least. It begins as we see the after events of The Gambler's death from the perspective of Cindy. We see her standing over the lifeless body of The Gambler before picking up his gun. The gun goes off when she shoots it by accident when her physical pain flares up once again. This is when the JSA arrived on the scene as we saw them catching Cindy almost red-handed with the gun in her hand. It's a bit of an odd start but nevertheless it was interesting to see Cindys side of what happened post Gambler being murdered. At the end of the last episode we saw that Courtney had seen the power of Cameron unleashed and wasn't really fazed by it. Here the two are still hanging out and by the looks of it very much crushing on one another..hard. Cameron walks Courtney home and the two once again share a kiss before Courtney goes inside beaming with delight but she's keeping it pretty low-key for the time being. She does however go to the basement and get the ISA file of Icicle as she is intent on finding out more about his powers and in turn his son Cameron.
In last weeks episode we learned that Dragon King was seemingly the one who killed The Gambler and this week we're off to one of his many secret labs. Starman is along for the ride with the rest of the JSA and they don't find anything really except for a mural of the old ISA which Starman destroys with the Cosmic Staff losing his temper in the process. Back at school and the JSA have a meeting which Cameron interrupts much to Rick's dismay. The two clearly don't like one another but Courtney asks that they get along for her sake as this is first time she has really like someone this much. It's soon after this where the episode just goes into motivational speech type territory which is something that I used to really dislike in The Flash. It's done a lot in this episode and while it can be great, done to this extent is not good in my opinion. We get scenes like Cindy talking to Courtney, Barbara talking to Sylvester and more. It drags the episode down a lot in my opinion.
The episode draws to a close as Starman goes to another lab belonging to Dragon King. This time alone he doesn't find much once again other than a notion that someone is clearly covering their tracks and covering their tracks well so much so that the investigation is at a standstill. I did like in this episode how Courtney was so head over heels in love with Cameron that she basically forgot all about Stargirl and even at the JSA meeting was so pre-occupied that everyone else pointed it out. A nice touch! The episode ends with a couple more things, first is Rick who with the help of Sylvester learns to unleash the full power of his Hourglass which in turn gives him unlimited strength. What did he have to do? well remove the limiter but I don't see this ending well at all. It's too much power all at once and that never ends well. Next up we see Yolanda in her full Wildcat gear sneaking into Cindys place where she looks for evidence on her fellow JSA member. She finds the evidence and it is in the form of the recently cracked laptop belonging to The Gambler. Yolanda says she knew Cindy was involved and she is going to kick her ass! that's how the episode ends and it was fine, extremely solid but nothing really more. I usually love the non heavy action episodes but this one didn't really do it for me. That is now 2 bang average episodes in a row hopefully things will improve next week!
