DC League of Super-Pets review

DC League of Super-Pets is quite the interesting movie in a sense that when it tries to be a super-hero movie it is at it's best but when it tries to be a straight up comedy it just falls flat on it's face. There really is no in between and that's disappointing as there is some good ideas here involving not just the Super-Pets themselves but also the Justice League and even Lex Luthor. That's not to say the comedy is all bad however as Kevin Hart and The Rock do offer some funny moments as Krypto and Ace respectively. Speaking of Krypto the movie centers around him and his relationship with the Man of Steel himself Superman. The two are pretty much always together much so to the point where we see both Superman and Krypto saving citizens and the like. The relationship takes a sour turn for Krypto when Lois Lane enters the scene and takes the attention of Superman away from his beloved pooch and onto her. It's an interesting concept one I did like for the most part. What I didn't really like was how the rest of the pets who just come from a regular animal shelter. I was expecting Ace to be the Bat-Hound version from the comics but alas no. They do build up to that and it is gratifying to see once it all wraps up but I wish more was explored in that sense. Krypto's journey is an interesting one and once the movie does end left me feeling happy for the guy. A good dog indeed!

Scale-wise League of Super-Pets is pretty small taking place mainly in Metropolis. It's filled to the brim with vibrant colors and everything you'd expect from a movie aimed at children. There is also plenty of references to the comics and other DC lore that I did appreciate. Performance wise The Rock as Krypto the Super Dog is fine, he's pretty basic here delivering lines in a real monotone sort of way. It's not bad just kind of there. Kevin Hart is the same bringing next to no real life to Ace even if the movie makes it seem like he is. Keanu Reeves as Batman steals the show in my opinion even though his role is for the most part a comedic one.

DC League of Super-Pets isn't bad. It's pretty average but kids will definitely lap it up. It's at it's very best in it's super heroic moments and at it's worse when Kevin Hart and The Rock try to be funny. Less of that and a more heroic focus could've been so much better here but ultimately what we got isn't all bad just sort of lacking given the potential for a movie of this type with the unique characters involved. Enjoyable just expect your kids to like it more than you!
